How to make a decent .avi including sound.

I've tried to make several scenes using quake video maker + vdub but I always fuck up.

What are the steps you take to make a watchable scene? I'm not after awesome fragmovie quality, just a 30 second clip that isn't pixelated or has messed up sound.

open demo - press f9 - wait - press f9 again and video = ready with sound.

Summarized:
  • Record scene with image-et
  • Record sound with wav_record (or something along those lines)
  • Virtualdub the .tga to .avi (preferably Lagarith)
  • Edit footage and sound in Vegas or a similar application
  • Optionally add manual popups, effects and music
  • Export the footage to .avi (again Lagarith) and the sound to .wav
  • Encode the footage to an x264 container (.mp4)
  • Encode the sound to .mp3 (for instance HQ VBR)
  • Mux the .mp4 and .mp3
