where does it say anything about XP sp3?
Parent
first step after clicking on install ;o

thats weird
Parent
so should I use 2008? if so sp1 or not?

what ENSJQM said...
shame that gcc etc.. aren't well supported on windows

(g)vim + make or scons + web browsers + g++ is the best way to do C++ stuff imo :p
no idea what you talkin bout, willis
in some board it just says it stops the pc from freezing after quitting a game (if one has this problem, like i do)

mingw = gcc
Parent
true but i find mingw hard to use :p

i guess mainly coz windows doesn't have very good terminal support and cygwin isn't much good either

i'd rather just use linux straight off

also if I have to make something to work on Windows i'd rather use an MS compiler whereever possible (it just makes more sense) likewise an Apple compiler with MAC stuff

Clang might beat them all though when its finished

Makes sense I guess. I've done a fair bit of programming, but only a few little applications in C++, all console based. And even less on linux. Will have a little read-up on that actually, cheers.

yeh GUIs in C++ are horrible although GTK is kinda nice now I understand a bit of it

i'd suggest looking into C# for GUIs and then using it to wrap around a C++ program which does the main 'work' but there again that might be a bit OTT unless you're a business :p

u on facebook ?
Parent
=D Am now, why? Im also on msn and IRC, so :p

I've used C# a fair bit as of late, mainly for ASP.NET though. So much easier, and I know people knock Microsoft, but I do enjoy using Visual Studio to get stuff done.
Parent
yeh C# (well CLR) is pretty much one of the best things MS did:p

waiting for the opensource version (mono) to catchup

my teacher mike is a cunt cba
for sure the latest, so 2008 there. Although 2010 is what is I use -- interface rewritten in wpf so its smoooth. Although if you're writing in c++ it isnt so important because they are more focused on .net languages with the updates, although c++ compiler is much better since 2005 version, and 2010 adds c++0x support which is really useful.

Certainly not 2005 since it was a bridging software from version 6, like vista or nt was to w7 and xp respectively (AKA it had features missing and bugs).
ok, sp1-version or not?
(see comment above for what i need it)
Parent
yeh it has bugfixes and think also adds new/updated technologies like C++0x and better WPF support etc - can't do any harm!
Parent
but there is 2008sp1 and simple 2008 and i don't know which to choose because i don't know what the difference is :s
is sp1 just an updated version or sth completely different?
Parent
Just get the most upto date version. Unless it specifically mentions it's not for your OS, which I think is unlikely.
Parent
from what he posted, he's interested in redistributable package only, not the IDE itself xD

abort suggested me this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=a7b7a05e-6de6-4d3a-a423-37bf0912db84
installed it.. might also be the video card drivers or sth, which makes it freeze tho' :/

i saw that after i posted, took me like 10mins to write that sentence stoned then i realised after but left it anyway since it took me so long to manage to make a sensical sentence :P
