ipod video 30 gb

hi guys ,
i got one of these ipods.
now i want to know if i could use them like a usb-stick aswell , or will this way of use destroy all the songs on it or sth else ?
because its not the same as a normal usbstick . the songs got different tags etc like on a " usbmp3player ".
so my question : could i make a new ordner on it just for datas without destorying anything
