new keyboard.

I need a new keyboard that I can press as many buttons as possible on without the keyboard going 'BEEP!' or just stops reacting. I played with a 9€ keyboard during the latter stages of EC and it made be handicapped not being able to move normally and tilted me fucking hard.

Before this I used a razer tarantula keyboard but I broke the V button on it and it's pretty messed up. I really can't be arsed to pay 75€ for that keyboard again just because I want a keyboard that will react when I press like 5 buttons at the same time.

So any ideas? Give me some names of a cheap keyboard that I can press like (more than) 5 keys with at the same time.

i'm pretty interested in getting a cherry keyboard actually, they look pretty sleek and minimalistic, do you have one? are you sure you can press multiple buttons on it without problems?

I crouch while I strafejump ingame most of the time and also check scores etc and it pisses me off so hard when the keyboard stops reacting all of a sudden cause of this.

RMA the board to Razer
Parent
y i got this keyboard. needed 1 night to get used to the keys but now it's ok and i think i can press buttons faster cause the pushing way is shorter :>
disadvantage are the f1-f12 buttons, it's hard to find them because they are not separated in in 4th-groups like at normal keyboard. another thing you have to get used to.

are you sure the peep-thing has to do with the keyboard? u dunno

with my cherry keyboard i can press multiple buttons. i can to crouch while strafejump ofc
Parent
actually it doesn't beep on my current keyboard, it does that on some keyboards, on mine it's silent but if I for example move forward in ET, strafe to the right, jump and crouch while jumping the keyboard sometimes stops reacting (I can't move or press any other button) it can easily be fixed by just releasing a button or whatever but it's really annoying as I didn't have this problem before with my regular keyboard and I press alot of keyboards ingame, for example +scores while jumping to check who's alive etc.
Parent
i know this beep sound. it shocked me several times in past when i had my old pc.
so imho it could be usb-controller or other hardware-random-shit in computer dunno
Parent
i got cherry with me it works sometimes not when i press wasd and strafing it stopps every 10 mins or sth but its ok ^^
Parent
looks sexy, price?
Parent
kidding me? thats cheaper than the normal logitech keyboard i have...the cherry is really good? or is it just an normal keyboard
Parent
got it 2 weeks now. quite good imo
Parent
well, its seriously sexy, lol

mer än 5 så behöver du en 4 kärnig cpu!
80€ and u can press 10 buttons at the same time and there is no *beep* xD

yeah, I used that before but 80€ feels like a bit of a waste :<

dunno haz foobar + not using the keys
g11, tho it might be a bit too expensive (?)
i care but i know that u can press 7 button at the same time with this keyboard
and this was one of the requirements .... :x
I use some very random microsoft keyboard =P Can press 5 buttons down and no BEEP !
you cant move back while crouching with it :/ (c+a+s)
I have crouch on CTRL and have never expirienced a problem with it :s it works perfect
Parent
I got it on C and it was disturbing when my guy wouldn't crouch when I wanted : P
Parent
Why are you including strafe-left (default 'a') in there?
Parent
'cause it ghosted the C if I pressed A and S at the same time (could have been clearer about that in my original post).
Parent
ok grad geguckt
die play/pause taste geht nur beim wmp
rest funzt :D
Maybe when he has this keyboard he thinks:
"Oh f*ck, i need more than 7 button i can press at the same time"
xD

i've been using this one for years - no problems. I checked and you can press 5 keys w/o BEEP! don't need more if you have normal 5-fingered hands. :D
looks pretty nice, any chance you could test it in ET and see if you can press 5 buttons ingame without any problems? :P

because with my current keyboard I have no beeps but in ET there are still problems.
Parent
well, i'm holding w + d + c + space + tab + shift and i'm still able to reload. Hope this helped. Btw thx for reminding me how PB ruins this game... :D

//edit: got it connected on PS/2 port.
Parent
I am using this keyboard aswell and did some small tests for you in ET but just like Agn said: No problems at all.

Good keyboard and i bought it for 15 euros
Parent
k, cool, I guess I might pick it up then =)
Parent
why ps/2 btw? and what's the name of the keyboard? :p
Parent
Its an Logitech UltraX Media Keyboard. It is USB so no worries. I've been using it myself since 2005 and its really a good Keyboard. Only thing that is damaged @ mine is my 'W' Button (Its pushed more into the keyboard, therefore extreme reaction if you touch it). Overall a nice and reliable keyboard and its not expensive at all - go for it :).
Parent
i don't know if you can press 5 keys on usb because i've been using it on ps\2 ever since. that's the reason why i marked that.
Parent
my 5 e :) great keyboard

cheap, lasts long and is really comfortable.
lol no usb?
and uberdelay imo
Parent
Usb on a keyboard :D
Parent
welcome to 2010.
Parent
Usb is inferior to PS/2 on a keyboard. PS/2 supports full n-key rollover. Also PS/2 keyboards are interrupt based rather than polled. Also by using a different input, the input won't be delayed by the USB bus being used by other devices.
Parent
There are certain things that make PS2 technically better than USB when it comes to keyboards (however not all things are possible on PS2 that are possible with usb keyboards, but that's a nother story) however the technical advantages of PS2 over USB are quite irrelevant if you look at them.

Sure, PS2 supports full n-key rollover which USB (without nifty drivers) doesn't. Then again, I don't know what kind of mutant you are but USB supports pushing down 6 keys at once which is more than sufficient for gaming or pretty much any other mundane every day task.

Besides that, both PS2 and USB are serial buses on which USB operates far faster than PS2. Not that that even matters because it simply comes down to both devices being way faster than the in comparison extremely slow devices they interact with. Humans.
Parent
no delay here.
Parent
how much ms?
Parent
how the fuck do i measure that?
Parent
by knowing wich keyboard u got, then googleing it and check specs
Parent
i can tell you without that - no delay!
Parent
rofl, its physically impossible.
Parent
yes you are right 0.0000001 seconds delay! omfg! fuck gonna buy G15.
Parent
ok you should definetly be in the current CF poll.
Parent
i know that i am, you just a livin proof
Parent
mine is 19 years old keysonic...
got some genius...beeps at 7 buttons :D
Ok what's the fucking point you will never press more than 5 buttons at once..

crouch + moving around + sprint(uselss if you crouch...)+jump+ putting riflenade on or switching weapon, would probably be the biggest combination I can think of..

Any nomal decent keyboard can handle that or u just fucked the keyboard up... My logitech elite media is still working after 4 or more years so pls..;)
I just put a random number in because my point is I want to be able to press as many keys as possible without the keyboard stops reacting or whatever. Even with 5 fingers it's possible to press more than one button with one finger and if that would happen at some point during gameplay I don't want to fucking stop moving.

I have no idea how many buttons I press while ingame but clearly most keyboards are just not good enough because most i've tried except for gaming keyboards have had this problem and it pisses me off so much ingame that I can barely play like that.
Parent
tbh it makes no sense cause I use a normal logitech media keyboard elite like i said and unless you press all the buttons like a mongol it won't crash... I don't think there is something wrong with ur keyboard cause afaik even with the everlasting old IBM keyboards you could press more than 6 buttons at the same time. The fact of it not reacting has nothing to see with your keyboard but with some error in processing the given information afaik but i could be wrong...
Parent
i'm no expert in computer or hardware whatsoever, all I know is that I've tried lots of keyboards and with Razer Tarantula and Logitech G15 I have no such problems ingame.

With random Hiper 9€ keyboard and several Microsoft shitkeyboards I've tried does have this problem. On the same computer. Maybe there's something that you can do to prevent this from happening with a regular shitkeyboard, and if there is I wouldn't mind getting info on how to do fix it.
Parent
Well i've got no clue where to start but the fact is a keyboard suddenly not working, means from a certain moment the information isn't getting processed anymore.. It IS POSSIBLE THOUGH that it happens when u press more than 5 keyboards on those shitkeyboards I don't know that for sure! xD

GL solving your problem!
Parent
It doesn't "crash" just to make that clear :p, it just temporarly stops working, which causes me to stop within a firefight for example ingame, or for example when I'm running to get the truck in ET and I check the scores at the same time I stop moving. All I know is that I didn't have this problem with a razer tarantula but I do now with a cheapish keyboard that I just bought.
Parent
well that is a temporarily crash.. I meant at a certain moment for instance when you check scores, the information sent by your keyboard to the Input/outpunt controller hub isn't getting processed/worked on! So this information doesn't get used but that doesn't mean it's broken, your problem can be the keyboard STOPS SENDING information after pushing too many keys and therefore the controller hub won't have to do anything:p Do you get what i mean or do i speak chinese for you? XD
Parent
yeah I sort of understand you, I never said it's broken though :p
either way, doesn't matter. My old keyboard is broke and I'm look for a better alternative than the 9€ keyboard i'm using right now.
Parent
Logitech media elite keyboard, it costs around 20 if i'm right and it's an awesome keyboard :)

Doesn't cost 60 euro like those gaming keyboards... :(

im using this! no beep sound.
If you want a good keyboard logitech or razer are the worst companies. The only gaming company that sells a half decent keyboard is Steelseries and they demand quite a high price for it.

You could look for advice at http://geekhack.org/ as mostly people on crossfire have no idea what makes a decent keyboard.
haven't looked into steelseries keyboards but if they do offer better quality than razers I might check them out despite the price.. and also it does surprise me that so many crossfire users don't seem to understand what I mean with this whole reaction/beep sort of problem.
Parent
This happens when the controller on the keyboard as a low rollover meaning certain key combos cannot be pressed at the same time. You get keyboards with N-Key rollover where you can press as many keys on the keyboard at the same times and they will still register but this is excessive for gaming as you only have 5 fingers.

If you didn't care about money you could buy one of the keyboards here

A cheaper alternative
Parent
They look really nice, the cheaper alternative that you mentioned is about the price of a razer keyboard, why should I pick this one up rather than a razer keyboard? I mean since both have anti-ghosting, the reason why I'm asking is because I guess this ABS keyboard is difficult to find in Sweden.
Parent
I pasted the wrong link. This is just a cheap mechanical keyboard. Mechanical keyboards are just better quality than regular keyboard from logitech or razer with the switches 10-20 times as long as regular keyboards. The ABS one had problems with the controller causing some of them to have issues with certain key combos.

This was the link I was looking for http://www.kbfly.com/Cherry_3484_EN.htm

The other thing about getting a decent keyboard is that you have to live in Germany or Japan in order to get them delivered locally. I usually have to pay extra to get them shipped over.
Parent
how much does it cost?
Parent
Cost me 70 euros from http://99hk.biz/

There is a huge choice when it comes to keyboards (switch type etc). If you don't want to spend to much money I guess looking for a cherry model would be an option.
Parent
and m1 have one of the poorest rollover implementations afaik
Parent
My one is fine but a friend of mine couldn't press more than two keys at the same time so there are issues with some of the boards. However I pasted the wrong link entirely.
Parent
what you are looking for are anti-ghosting keyboard.

if you arent satisfied with razer maybe you should look for a way to disable the beeping sound through the software.
Parent
The beep is a symptom not the actually problem.
Parent
ye i know but i dont know how to explain the prob because im not expert.
Parent
yeah I just looked into the specs for the Razer Tarantula that I was using before, they called it anti-ghosting and that's basically what I'm looking for I guess. A decent, decent priced keyboard with this function :p

I was satisfied with my razer keyboard btw, it's just that it's broke now and I bought a cheap one that has this ghosting problem.
Parent
well I have the razer arctosa and its the cheapest razer got and tbh im rly satisfied
got ghosting aswell btw :P
Parent
you mean anti-ghosting right? oO
Parent
yes ofc :D
Parent
read my post about tarantula :P
the fags from razer cant make decent instruction/faq so almost NOONE knows about turbo mode
Parent
tarantula is pretty nice, the only USB keyboard with 10+ key rollover
Parent
Logitech Deluxe 10€

- "soft buttons" well how to explan?^^ smart feeling if you push the buttons and it's not that loud like other standart keyboards :P

- you can smash the keyboard as hard as you want & it's still working. tested by myself :)

- you can push 5 buttons @same time!!! :P

BUY IT!!1!!!!11!!!

image: logitechdeluxe250kbonly
I have this same kayboard with shivaomnom and is woring great ; 0 problems, no "Beeps" and is pretty chip in Poland and ofc. u can push many buttons.
Get one of the Apple keyboards. I think they are great!
They do look brilliant.
Parent
Ì got razer tarantula too, but sometimes I can even get that one tilted. I've kinda tried to find a keyboard like that as well. Also I use some older apple keyboards, they are pretty good
switch to turbo mode :S
Parent
haven't heard of this before :o
well I see your post under mine where you explain how to do it, but what does it change then and is there something bad about it?
Parent
your tarantula is able to handle 6keys or smth in the default legacy mode(aka USB standart keyboard mode) which is enough for almost anyone. Turbo mode allows to press up to 14keys simultaneously or so. that is enough for EVERYONE
and there's nothing bad about it :D
Parent
haha, sounds good :D

but why isn't it in turbo mode by default then?

and one more stupid Q. I find the profile button, but where/which one is the RAZER button :s ?
Parent
dunno why it's off by default. maybe this turbo mode doesnt work on some PCs, absolutely no idea

between right alt and ctrl :D
Parent
ah ok found it now :D

I thought it's in some special place, didn't really understand to check among the normal keys :)

I use that kb on my playing PC, so gotta try it when I put it on
and btw, if I do it once, it stays on for next time I power up the PC or do I need to do it everytime again when I start up?
Parent
ye it stays
Parent
lul how you broke the key on tarantula?
does it get stuck inside and doesnt pop out or what?
if so - just swap it with one of those blue keys or with some other key and it should work well, whetting keys is one of the main problems of membrane keyboards ;s
btw for pure n-key rollover aka NKRO(the feature allowing to press 5+ or all keys at once) on tarantula you need to switch turbo mode on, otherwise it's not better than any other keyboard on the market:
QuoteChange from legacy to Turbo Mode

1) Hold Down "Profile" Button

2) Press and release "Razer" Button

3) Release "Profile" Button

4) The LEDs on the Tarantula will flash twice when you change
from Legacy > Turbo and once when yhou change from Turbo > Legacy

though NKRO isn't really N-key, allows up to 10 keys or a bit more

as for cheapest NKRO keyboard they all are mechanic PS/2 ones and would cost about the same as tarantula or more ;s http://www.overclock.net/computer-peripherals/491752-mechanical-keyboard-guide.html
but anyway mechanical keyboards are worth every penny, i tried steelseries 6g and basically the badly implemented standart 3key rollover on that model is the only thing which i disliked, everything else pwned, mechanical keys <3

but if you really dont wanna spend much - buy some fancy modern gaming usb keyboard, most of them are limited by USB standart which supports up to 6keys+4modifiiers pressed at once or smth like this which might be enough for you
the button on tarantula isn't stuck or anything, after a while you had to press it hard as hell to get response, then later if just barely worked at all. Let's just say I broke it while dueling low-acc protimers in quake live =D

at this point i'm not really sure what keyboard I'm gonna buy, I'm leaning towards the ABS M1 Heavy Duty Professional Gaming Mechanical Keyboard, but if I can't find it anywhere in Sweden i'm just gonna go ahead and buy a razer/steelseries keyboard or whatever as long as it has this NKRO technology.

and btw, the NKRO function was working fine when I used tarantula, it's just that I'm using a random 9 euro keyboard right now and it doesn't have this technology obv :p
Parent
I just read some reviews and Im not sure if this some bullshit but..,
QuoteCons: Will only respond to one keypress at a time. If you are holding down CTRL and press S, it will ignore the S.

edit:
QuoteUsing the showkeys program, I was able to determine that the keyboard wasn't sending any other events that happen while CTRL or ALT is being held down.
Parent
yeah I read that too, but if you check the response of the developer they wrote that what you said only applied to the first batch of keyboards, so maybe it's fixed now.
Parent
your tarantula was able to handle 6keys or smth in the default legacy mode which is enough for almost anyone. Turbo mode allows to press up to 14keys simultaneously or so. that is enough for EVERYONE. NKRO(which Tarantula really hasnt) allows to press ALL keys simultaneously. No thx have only 10 fingers.

ABS M1 is one of the cheapest mechanical keyboards, BUT afaik it doesnt have advanced rollover, first revision was only able to handle 1(!!!!!!!!!) keypress at once. was fixed l8r and now I believe it's the same as your 9 euro keyboard, they dont have full NKRO in the feature list ;s

I believe in sweden you can easily find Steelseries 7G which is a fucking decent mechanical keyboard with full NKRO, it's a bit more expensive than tarantula but it's MUCH better imo.
getting another tarantula would make you make you write the same journal in 3-5 years when it breaks again.
getting steelseries 7g will make you write the same journal in your next life when keyboards are out of fashion.
and steelseries 6g(the one i tried, old and also cheap one) has only 3key rollover(cant press some combos like fdv or qwa, prolly the same as your 9 euro keyboard now) eventhough it's mechanical <3 and to type on it is a pleasure.
Parent
hmm, 100 euro for 7G :(
e: I appreciate the post/clarification btw :p
Parent
I think that Razer Lycosa would be pretty nice if you want something similiar as your old one. Im probably going to buy that too. Not sure yet >_o
Parent
well if old tarantula was fine for you then you could buy some "gaming" keyboard with standart 6key rollover
Parent
If you are having trouble in games with rollover the ABS won't be the best mechanical keyboard. I tested mine which will allow 4 key presses with most keys but some key combos only allow 3 key presses simultaneously. I personally never press more than 4 keys down at the same time so I can game on most of the standard cherry keyboards but if you press more than that you would have to look for boards which did 6 key rollover or get a more expensive board with full nkro.
Parent
what's the cheapest 6 key rollover keyboard?
Parent
nice, thanks =)
Parent
logitech g11 ... not rly expensive nowdays..
Logitech UltraX.
Very good and quite cheap.
