This afternoon the cheating accusations sunk to a new low, when a long term clan mate woke up to read Yawn.be and decided that was proof enough to turn on his for former team mate.
Yes thats right This Afternoon Breezy took the whole cheating scandal to a new level, of complete reversal of opinion and joined by his e-bullying friend Potsmoker we've seen our beloved game thrown into an all new level of disrepute!
In the dock today is h3, a player with no mentionable accolade to his name and who's long term ET history lies in UK based clans who have never caught the limelight. A player who infact has had many an argument with this writer, however one with a completely clean track record. In the dock last night (all be it privately) was Frozzen. Why these two? Well Yawn has now syncronised their database with that of Punkbusted & PBBans and now at a simple typing of a name you can see who has been kicked from a server by PunkBuster and for what reason.
Mass hysteria ensues and now we look at our little game in disarray as allegations of cheating appear left right and centre, with or without proof. Well, what is proof? In my books, proof is the same proof Clanbase used to kick RazZ from their leagues. Whilst Clanbase may be slow to act, they most certainly have never banned someone who didn't deserve it, and why? They reacted only to a PBScreenshot and the accompanying information.
But now the tide is turning and we're witnessing a flurry of information that is not accompanied by a PBScreenshot. Is this how we must continue to play? Dreading the next allegation, awaiting the next journal. Where did it all go wrong?
The Downward Spiral
- Saturday 13th of May Clanbase announced the decision to ban RazZ from Eurocup. After PBScreenshots were taken from a server.
- Friday 26th of May - Punkbuster launches its new PBScreenshot code
- Monday 12th of June Crossfire launches its Cheater Forum, in less than 30 days with 47 threads of allegation have been posted.
- Friday 16th of June Torspo is put on public trial and under Clanbase investigation by avi, without PBSS.
- Saturday 8th of July Clanbase bans its 20th cheater since banning Razz, of which none are of competitive fame.
We sit in uncharted territory, and for sure enemy territory. Our genre has never known this scenario. RTCW was almost cheat free, or at least had beautiful ignorance where we believed that we were cheat free. However, with ET being a free game and fuelled by the release of the Quake 3 Engine Source, our game is under attack and now is the time for action!
I talked to DoneX of Clanbase briefly to see what value this latest tool of Yawns'.
Would you ban based on what Yawn states? i.e. without a PBSS
So Frozzen of sth could be banned? (He is listed on Yawn as being kicked for a PBHack)
So is the circle complete? We've gone from needing a PB Screenshot and with it the witnesses from the server itself. To now believing Yawn.be without a witness present and a log that cares not about circumstance and nor about the possibility of guid spoofing?
Think of it this way - DoneX has stated that there is the possibility that Frozzen could be banned from Clanbase, based on Yawn.be, without witness.
All crimes need a witness, but now we're willing to turn cheating into a completely faceless business, with the defendant left at the peril of an external website. What would your reaction be if Frozzen was banned tomorrow without demo or PBScreenshot?
Fusen proves Here that Yawn and its guid tracing abilities are not perfect, and yet there is the possibility someone could be banned via it? Give me a PBScreenshot anyday
So where to now, how do you solve ET's cheating crisis?
