In a matter of hours, or days, the ET community will receive one of the most important pieces of information of the year. No, it isn't what the new-look idle lineup will be, nor is it a press release on the forthcoming GTV.ORG2. It is one which will affect all echelons of the game, right from the top level EuroCup sides to the to the teams who play purely for fun. It is the announcement from ClanBase on who will become their newest Enemy Territory supervisor.
Why is this appointment so significant? After all, in layman's terms a supervisor is essentially just another admin with a set of extra powers. But in the ClanBase establishment, matters do not work like that. There is a reason why so many can make it to a potential cupadmin status, but so few earn the right to join the ClanBase Crew. A supervisor has the ability to control, and change, the very direction a game travels in. ClanBase forms the benchmark for games, and changes they make, or rather that the supervisor makes, are highly likely if not certain to set a precedent within all the other cups and competitions that the particular game stages. For example, who pioneered and introduced the removal of XP upgrades? ClanBase. And who adopted this idea? Everyone else. Far from progress and or change being a project undertaken by smaller organisations for others to follow if they wish, it is they who attempt to persuade ClanBase to absorb the success they have enjoyed into their own policy, thus giving the green light for others to follow suit. And wherein lies the power of the supervisor: they decide what goes, what stays, and ultimately, how successful a game is. You might argue that this description 'sexes up' the importance of a CB supervisor, but in reality no matter how much work is done by the rest of the community, the ultimate laurels of responsibility fall on the supervisor's shoulders.
This is a responsibility that ClanBase recognise. As previously mentioned, becoming a cupadmin for CB is not altogether that difficult: you only need to summarise into a few sentences why you believe you can help a cup become even more successful than it was going to be already (or not, as the case may be). Yet becoming a supervisor is an entirely different kettle of fish. The path to the position is hardly straightforward, and contains issues of trust, ability and integrity. Firstly, potential applicants must apply to the current supervisors and display their willingness to land the position. From these applicants, a list is drawn up containing only people who the supervisors feel have earnt a right to becoming a sup, and who would benefit the community by their appointment. As such, the list is small. Only 8 (I believe) names were present on this list this season. But this is only the beginning of the story. From there, each applicant is required to have a formal interview online with the ClanBase top-brass, who are hardly if not at all involved in ET, and don't know anything like as much about each candidate as, say, you and I might. It is left then to these few - all deserving - individuals, to persuade ClanBase that they are the right person for the job - what makes them a better choice than all the rest and how the game will benefit as a result of them being in place. But just who are the people who are vying for the supervisors position right at this very moment. Well, they are:
n3co
Anaconda
lab
bullvox
Toxic
Splodge
...and there are doubtless 1 or 2 others, seeing as 25 or so applicants applied for the position such as promising admins like evanbraakensiek, as well as many more..
So as you can see, an accomplished group, all of whom have the potential to benefit ET. The interview process is ongoing with people like Toxic currently on holiday, but soon it will be left to CB to decide who it appoints and who it offers condolences to. But whoever you feel would make the best supervisor and whoever does receive the job in the end, one thing is for certain: that person who is the newest sup is there for a reason: they've worked tirelessly often without gratitute, and they deserve the full support of the community in what is often a thankless job. All thats left now is to await ClanBase's decision. Until then, best of luck to all our potentially great supervisors!
