Finally hegemony has been dethroned and we actually have a competitive scene, the missing piece of the puzzle? (No not my Quakewars 3rd part, that comes this weekend) But a little thing called school!
Yes, School the place that Idle and Dignitas have taken us all to on how to play the game is the very source of their current demise. Night's exams forced a prolonged period out of the loop for Mr. Clanleader 2006, his return has been compounded by Reloads absence and they've not been able to hit the dizzy heights of Quakecon and CPC1, and their path back to the number 1 spot looks like it may finally be challenging.
Taking a trip back down memory lane (a place I visit quite often in these columns) the game has been dominated for great lengths by just one team, Dignitas at first, Saevus second, u96d, parodia, idle all have had extended periods on the throne and nobody has seemed capable until their own demise of challenging them. Saevus had brief attacks from Finnish sides Gunslingers and DSky, whilst Parodia and Idle equally had moments of optimism during the others tenure, but the fact remains we nearly always knew who was going to win.
3 years of competitive stagnation is enough to drive any community into the ground, but it hasn’t! Why? Over-hyped and over written coverage has infact given ET delusions of grandeur of its competitive scene. When any one team remains unbeaten for 14 months interest in the game must suffer as a consequence? However it hasnt, what bemuses me is that now that we actually have a three horse race for the title and where oh where is that coverage that kept this scene alive?
TLR, Dignitas and Impact now all harbour hopes of beating one another, when can that ever have been said before? This Sunday there is the realistic prospect of Dignitas being relegated into the losers bracket and yet somehow the alarm bells have barely rang down at CB HQ.
When ESL launched its first IPS season a combination of Chosen and Kafux showed the world what coverage was, "these men of will" wowed us with graphics, previews, reviews and flags yet their competition can only be remembered for 512th helix ET squad taking a map off idle in the grand final. The following EC season saw a remarkable upturn in coverage, and it looked as if the bar had been raised. All this whilst the matches were boring, the grand final was again another Dignitas rape, despite being on LAN.
This season? Despite an resurging effort by xRio the Eurocup has barely featured in the headlines here. Don’t let the one truly riveting Eurocup season be left unremembered. In the past weeks we've seen nations cup after nations cup news, but whilst those mixes have been forming, real teams have actually been playing and beating eachother!
Many names have come and gone who have brought news to the masses trying to light the fire of ET, finally the flame came alive thanks to the Estonia education system and there is no petrol being poured on top of it.
Perhaps I am alone in this opinion, I am maybe someone who is more 'sensitive' to the slightest drying of the coverage well, but the way I see it, ET is crying out for chosen and kafux to raise that bar once again, because they and coverage is the missing piece of the puzzle!

Take other gaming communities as example. Gotfrag has a nice page and great possibilities for coverage, you are able to display grids, tables, and other rankings. (eg. http://www.gotfrag.com/cs/story/37600/ ) Look at the match preview function at many websites eg. http://www.sk-gaming.com/news/6643/ or http://www.team-dignitas.org/index.php?id=4396 . Ampedesports as well has some nice graphics.
What I want to point out is. The coverage for matches/cups is difficult to write and it takes you a lot of time to write a complete news (at least for me). In my opinion the coverage possibilities should be optimized and make everyone able to do it.
On the other side - and that's the main problem - is just the number of motivated people. We need more writers.
PS: Would be nice to see more coverage possibilities at gtv.org as well.
- ESL IPS, the reason they could do so much was because the website is much nicer in regards to matches and you don't have to do reports either. So to update the community site once a week about a competition which only had like 4/5 teams (you failed to mention this point) is quite easy. I'll personally remember the IPS for aMenti vs Helix on Supply (decider) and again aMenti vs NETR match.
- You kinda overlook my investment Dire stuff but still which had like 15-20k legit views, so stop giving xRio all the credit. I actually had something half written when xRio started his "tendion building" article so I thought I would let him have a go and keep mine (which was better than usual it must be said).
- I personally enjoy writing any other than coverage, because it rots your brain. Especially for ET since it is still quite predictable, and when i do come out with unorthodox predictions or opinions to diversify a bit it gets shredded to bits.
- As for Clanbase and Eurocup this season, you can rest the blame purely with the supervisors, the actual admins have been great.
- Most of the people "qualified" or willing have other jobs to do or are just unable to contribute at present simple as.
- If it bothers you that much, put nellie, foonr, fusen or one of the other admins who seemingly do nothing most of the time to work for a change!!
I rather got the feeling it was you personally got flamed, and not the content (or at least not everytime).
No?
are you jealous? sounds like....
Our Final Stage might be the one which is fresh in your mind, but we had the same sum of news news/articles/reviews already for our Qualifiers and First Stage (in English and German!). And talking about an update once a week is absolutely bullshit, but in view of my first sentences you'll understand it for sure :)
is that because you are an admin yourself?
your preview was really nice but to be honest, it was too much preview at once... you covered everything from teams to player at once. left nothing to write about on the whole eurocup except possible outcomes of the group phase. and thats exactly what i did... so you kinda made it impossible for anyone to write a nice preview without copying you.
you have to feed the audience :P give them one piece and after that a second. preview the team on one match and the players on the other. maybe ask for some players to shine their light on the maps on the next match... at least thats how i think of coverage...
i just written a comment as if i'm your teacher and superior but believe me, i have a lot to learn from you. this is just something im pretty good at ;)
are you jealous? sounds like....
1) People are occupied with school. In the case of many, exams are drawing near, and time is becoming precious. What little free time is left is probably spent on escapism or activities that tax the brain as little as possible.
2) "what bemuses me is that now that we actually have a three horse race for the title and where oh where is that coverage that kept this scene alive?" -- If coverage was actually what kept the scene alive previously, when the outcome of most matches was highly predictable and things were, well, dull, then surely it has become less of a necessity, now that things have become unpredictable and exciting?
You guys started good with that logbook, but even after 4 hours it didn't got updated perfect anymore. We didn't have ETTV for a lot of interesting matches, you guys promised demos to replace the ETTV but I only saw 1 demo from like 8 matches. No decent ET updates either, we had matches being in the news that were played hours ago, shoutcasting was limited, etc.
Just some thing I think you guys need to improve on if you're going to organise a third LAN.
And please don't reply with "if you think it's so easy come and do it yourself" or something like that.
And you are hyping it SO much? Please...
Now i am gonna think, that you and Adacore staged it :P
(Ok, i see - ofc that was for the sake of ET :)
and dignitas didnt lose on both of those they won another and lost on decider that was radar
Cadre played a great match and win it only because were performing very well
That wasnt just an end of an era or smth like that :D
don't forget to write something about trickjumping
some persons told me that you can bunnyhop/strafe with knife or pisol (one handed weapon) and not with the rest
there is a rampjump, and no circlejump? :(
maybe something related to a second and a thrid jump too (for jumping higher?)
thanks
