As Quakecon approaches previewing its tournament is poised to be the hardest preview I've ever done. How do you preview a tournament for a game that isnt released yet and features just one European team against a community who personify the meaning of 'diamond in the rough'.

As appears to be a growing trend the American community in Quakwars is without definition. Just like with Call of Duty, when the WSVG hit Dallas last month the Europeans didnt know what to expect from their American opponents because there isnt the same competitive legitimacy in American tournaments, CAL is no longer what it was and CEVO not quite the be all and end all of any game so how do you judge who's going to win the event?

Europe has beta tournaments coming out of its ears, i3d, QWL and Clanbase have flooded the market with tournaments. Sure it produced a few replicated matches and its only on one map, but the truth is we do know that one2 are better than dignitas and because of that we can safely say that Dignitas head to Quakecon with a cloud over their head. They are beatable, they are flawed somewhere and the biggest problem is that they know it! For all of this team they're used to working hard and getting to the top and then looking down on the world for quite some time, now they're back amongst the layer cake. With that being said, they'll be happy to actually be getting as much practice with their Quakecon roster as they can,

What will the Americans throw at them?

Team HOT go to Quakecon as possible favourites after reaching the final of the American season of QWL. They face demise in the final but go into it with bags full of experience, experience that you can take to the bank in a high pressure tournament. The CGI shaped this diamond and with money on the line they'll be there again to pickup the big bucks. The side are actually sending their affiliated team (B team?) to the event, though eyes are most certainly on the main roster. They finish their QWL season tonight having actually only had to win two matches (some forfeit wins), their Battlefield achievements and stated practice activity are what mark them down as potential favourites.

Quote by Lashton Our team always takes preparations very seriously. Do we expect to be in the final? I would say that we will be very disappointed if we aren’t in the finals because we seem to be more adept at this style of game than our current competitors are at the moment. Most of them hate vehicles and in turn aren’t very good with them, but we’ll see what happens. All we can do is try our best and see whether it gets us.

20ID’s interview with gameriot reeks of an arrogance that states they head to Quakecon as the only team with significant ET experience. One must hope that reality cuts through that arrogance when reload and jak show up with their Quakecon gold medals around their neck. The side posses some talent from ET in 2005, whether that will hold up in Quakewars is yet to be seen. In that same interview, Radea naively attempted to dismiss European chances by citing the CGI in 06 as an example of American sides being stronger than European’s in Battlefield. This perhaps done in ignorance of the fact that code7 who were the only representative for Europe, weren’t in any way shape or form the top European side at the time. The side does offer the best of the American ET scene with players like nothx and Silver in attendance who both have Quakecon history, whether it’ll be enough will have to be seen, but they certainly think it will be!

The two Check Six rosters will offer strong resistance, their second lineup Deceptions includes notable NA ET talent with Sage and Digital. They have a great deal of Battlefield experience and will offer the same as a great deal of the other sides, Battlefield vehicle and deployment tendencies over the more aim based mindset of an ET side. The success of this will be very difficult to measure with the game in its current format, however they’ll face alot of the same in Dallas this weekend.
There are other sides in the running dz have made it all the way to the QWL finals in the states and 50 cal should also offer some competition. For alot of these sides it will boil down to how easily they hit the ground running in the arena of Quakecon. The venue is large, the pressure and crowds are huge and if you let it, the occasion can overcome you.

As mentioned, compiling an actual prediction is going to be very hard. Americans do perform well on LAN, however they’re not competition hardy. Dignitas will have an advantage in their competitive readiness and Quakecon experience, but that doesn’t mean they’ll win. Dignitas’ inability to keep their Quakecon roster intact for a sustained period of time to practice will hinder them, especially when some of their North American rivals don’t have any such problems. Expect surprises and diversity in Dallas this weekend!

The top three positions payout this weekend and my money would be on HOT and Dignitas to occupy two of those positions, outside of that anyone could be anyone!
