Enemy Territory Quake Wars had always excited me from the moment that I heard of the game.
I was, and still am, a dedicated Wolf: ET player, and I realize just as well as everyone else that ET is basically dead. With the conclusion of CDC3, we might have seen the last great ET LAN, and along with that the last great moment for ET. ET was without a doubt in my mind the greatest online game I have ever played, and that is why I still cling to it even though its end is near. As any ET player can understand, this game did everything right. It provided the perfect mix of combat, and there was something for everyone. If you wanted to show off your tracking skill you could use SMG. If you wanted to show off your timing, and spatial skills you could use rifle. If you wanted to show your battle sense you could use arty. If you were a master of being in the right place at the right time you could massacre with the panzer.
It never got old. Many times I found myself pubbing, and I got bored with the SMG, yet there was still many other different classes or guns I could utilize, and the whole game changed depending on that. I played rifle completely differently than I did SMG. Simply switching classes could create a whole new game. This alone separated ET from games like CS where you simply chose between pistols, rifles and snipers.
What was so great was that ET did this, while at the same time still keeping the game simple. There was so much to do, yet even someone new to the game could grasp the game within days.
The reason that I was looking forward to Quake Wars so much, was that I wanted a second Wolfenstein ET. I really did. Perhaps this was what disappointed me so much. Quake Wars has the same class system and overall theme as ET, yet it is vastly different. Unlike ET this game is complicated. Take all the classes, give them more abilities, and then add vehicles to the mix. It takes away the beautiful simplicity of ET, one of the things that made it great. Bigger is not always better.
The second thing it neglects is infantry combat. This is no longer a player vs. player game. This becomes a tank vs. player game. An automated turret vs. player game. A landmine vs. player game. The spam versus the skill in ET was very well balanced, where in QW the spam is over the top. A game where I can set up a turret and kill people without even doing anything is not fun for me. A game where I can get in a tank and one-shot kill people who can't even touch me by shooting me is not fun for me.
Sometimes I just find myself frustrated by playing QW. Maybe it is just the craziness of pub, but when I spawn just to be killed within seconds by a player in a tank, it just seems unfair. Perhaps I am not realizing the overall team aspect of the game and I should be counting on my team to take out the tank, but my mind tells me differently. My mind says that in a good game, it should not be purely rock-paper-scissors. If I am paper, I should still be able to have a chance against scissors even if the odds are against me. In ET, no matter what was going on, it came down to pure combat between one or more people. If someone was trying to panzer me, I still had those few seconds while the panzer was charging to kill them. Even if it was extremely hard to kill them in that short time of charge, I still had a shot. If I failed there was always next time.
In QW there is no next time. If a tank is pointed at you, you die, it's as simple as that. Turrets are another thing that take away that great player vs. player combat. If I get killed by a player, I want to feel like I was outplayed. If I walk around a corner and get shot up by some kid's automated turret, that feeling is not there. Instead I just feel frustrated that they were able to kill me without lifting a finger. A good video game should require skill to gather kills and not just a decent spot to drop your big metal aimbot gun. I want to feel like we had a fight, and they beat me fair and square. There is nothing more frustrating in a game than dying and not being able to do anything about it.
In the end, Quake Wars disappointed me. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that Quake Wars is a bad game. I preordered it and I expect to play it, just not to the extent that I played ET. All I am trying to say is that QW is by no means ET. It is not even close. Maybe I am just biased against vehicles, and my argument has no basis, maybe on the other hand my argument is valid. You tell me.

ET:QW has exactly the same game play as RTCW and ET, so you either don't like the engine (net code, hit boxes etc) or you've never played it and just talking shit. Logic dictates this.
The vast majority of vehicles are neglected in competition either because their useless for that particular map or the 'config' says their too powerful and are going to be limited. All this for a game which has been out less than a month. CoD2 users had to wait months just to get any form of anti cheat implemented. I think your expectations of a perfect or similar game to ET right off the bat are highly uninformed and unrealistic.
If you had said, you didn't want to play or didn't like ET:QW because it isn't WW2 based, then that's an acceptable 'excuse', because the game play is literally the same and most of his issues are only found on public. :P
About RTCW2: I think it will be the game which you can expect to have similar/better gameplay than ET so I say "let's wait and see coz ET:QW is a different game IMO and we cannot think of it as the ET successor"
2. cod2 users waited 6 months for pb.
3. pb didn't do something good in cod2, best example is you.
- Stop watch
- Objective
- 6v6
- Class based
The difference is, ET:QW has added more variables and introduced differences in the classes and races and made it unbalanced (ie gdf overpowered). They've made the covert op class actually useful and the weapons/vehicles will be nerfed with a good mod/config in a few months when the sdk is released.
Never said it did, but point three isn't valid since I played on non pb servers :]
maybe i define gameplay differnt, since ur not wrong at all in my opinion, but i dont think its anywhere near equal regarding all points
only thing u have to get used to: vehicles, movement.
i say the rest is the same, even the aiming style (ofc not completly)
did u play anything else than beta and demo?
i didnt complain about it, I just think the gameplay isn't the same at all. Possibly because I just have 20 unstable fps or no competive venture yet.
sw_gr is nice TBH so is salvage and island :)
The overriding problem which everyone has, because we all wanted a ET successor, is the engine. As it stands, the engine is the main issue which is stopping people transferring over. The imbalances, vehicles and maps will all be resolved given time, everyone knows this, because the same process happens in every game.
But that nagging feeling at the back of your mind, 'why I'm wasting my time on this game' is what many ET players will be feeling. It's the reason many Quake 4 players left shortly after the first season, because the game didn't and couldn't match the perfection that was Quake 3. It's the reason why Counter Strike: Source hasn't killed '1.6.
We're in an unfortunate situation because our options are limited. If you enjoy the game play of RTCW & ET, then you'll have to bite the bullet and just get used to the new engine. RTCW2 will be using id Tech 4 as well. Your holding out for an inevitable disappointment.
This is why I see a lot of ET players switching and merging with the CoD community soon.
I see more empty ET:QW servers than ET servers by the way, and I've yet to see a full or even remotely full European server early in the morning. :P
now lets hope CoD4 is better then QW. Atleast the engine is a lot better/playable.
What's even better, it's free to use now as well :]
ow and buy RtCW2 just for fun :D
Isn't Severity going to be a commercial game? They bought a commercial license for the Q3 engine anyway, so it's not using the open source (free) version.
'Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will run on a proprietary engine'
Make your own mind up, but CoD4 has the exact same feel as the CoD2 and CoD1 and the Quake 3 engine is free to use and edit as much as they want now, see for yourself.
The GPL version is free to edit and it's free to use in a commercial project, but only if they release the modified source (for anyone else to use!).
As I said, it's very unlikely that a commercial company would release the source for a new title, and it's most certainly not the case here. It's quite possible that they still have elements from the commercially licensed Q3 engine in CoD4, but then it's not relevant to this "free engine" discussion.
"CoD4 has the exact same feel "
Physics and movement isn't even done in the engine in Q3. :P
"Maybe it's a matter of pride, but I feel I need to note that our engine is made completely in house."
It doesn't really matter though, because as I said the physics aren't even done in the engine in Q3, so his point is moot.
it was end of ice-hockey when gretzky left? u said like "omg this isnt hockey anymore look at this noobs"?.. but new gretzky's was there in these "noobs"
These days also. most nice clans say: no sorry your to unknown. even if u play the game for 3/4 years never wanted to achieve something they say that.. well how can someone become known if all good clan say: sorry to unknown.. no new "pro" players can arise because of that
And rtcw² for.... 2012 ?? :/
Personally I found the UT 2007 Demo MUCH better (its an MP demo btw):
http://www.gamersnation.co.uk/Core/article/sid=1699/title=Unreal_Tournament_2007_BETA_Demo_released!_(PC,_PS3,_XBox_360).html
funny thing is that cod2 players also call their game "dead" and yet you have like 20 wars being played daily on CB, it's just in the minds of frustrated people
also
is bullshit, and I've seen a lot of people say it, but you're all saying like ET had so many LANs that in the past 2 years the number of LANs decreased so heavily thus making it dead or something...HELLO?? You can count the number of proper LANs ET EVER had on the fingers of your hands: Quakecon, PGA, shgopen, CDC(CPC) and that's it, and those were mostly in past 2 years
so shut it with those bs arguments
also et > et:qw, with et:qw is just a game made for 2 worlds to get the money and turned out to be for neither
ET OWNS QW
To enjoy it and get the most out of QW you need to take a different approach to the game play (If anything you need to play smarter because of the heavy vehicle/mechanical presence).
In saying that, from what I've seen from the Australian QW community is, that it very much is a war/match only game.
very strange
btw, this all sounds like the same stuff that was said when et came out and rtcw died. ET was a joke compared to rtcw. I have no idea what the end result of et is like because I havent played it for ages. But to me et:qw feels like it has way more in common with rtcw and I love it. Maybe its jsut the rate of fire I dont know.
ps: ET is far from dead
Carmack said the same at quakecon
example: W:ET is game where he wins who sees first (screenshake, etc) and theres aint any possibility to see leaning enemy, it sounds very stupid to me. For me etqw has much better hitboxes than ET, maybe it sounds weird to many but its true.
Complexity of tactics/teamwork is very nice aspect of etqw.
Avoiding bullets aint any more just strafing back and forth, etqw has its own uniquestyle and i like it.
Etqw is much faster game than et on some phases, quakestyle! :)
Nevertheless there is still some aspects which i dont like but the good aspects of etqw are just so good and therefore i enjoy of playing it. Maybe coming promod will fix some of those bad things.
Leaning would be ok if a person would be visible AND hitable. Currently it's fucking annoying...
its not like q3,cs,ET .. there u really have to aim ..when i played ET:QW i just shooted to the enemy and he died. there was no real challange in aiming
@edit: i also dont like this whole detailed shit.. games like cs,et,q3 where always "simple"
e: thats why its no challenge for u
Why you then got owned by pistol?
Thx for your very professional opinion about the game :(
It's different to pub..
Carmack said the same at quakecon "
See, most cs'ers I know who have played rtcw said it was too complicated for them. CS is the core of simple, and it's boring as hell. So looking at things as if they should be simple is very shortsighted. Leave the simple for the kids :)
If I was European my position would be different, but unfortunately I am not.
I rly hope the community will grow again and achieves new rly skilled players.
Keep making cups every weekend and bigger cups during a week or even more and keep making big LANs which are always pushing the motivations of all players even in pubs ;)
Dont let this game die, Enemy Territory deserves to be famous and enjoyable as it always was.
Sry if my english isnt that well ^^
I apologize but FUCK OFF with this retarded view. If everybody wont be such lazy whiner spammer player and do something such as cups, coverage etc W:ET will be RISING! But your stupid whine and crying "W:ET dead pls come ply ET:QW with us is co cool and we can win $$$$$$$$$$" ... go to hell!
Dont take it personal, but I am really disappointed, because I have experienced that there IS STILL CHANCE for W:ET but most players DONT WANT to try it, just because they want something but offering nothing, as in real life if you want from somebody favour you should proove yourself... :/
nothing like TF2, or UT3, or cod4
all the above VERY smooth with better performance
i dont even expect rtcw 2 to be like et .. if its like the first rtcw just good enough for me
as for qw u if u like it try:
warrock
battlefield
my point being: its the same bullsh*t
and I agree with nearly everything you said.
And these are the things that define a game and its gameplay. Mods and rules won't change this.
Why? Simple, people want a successor for an already perfect game, thats impossible. Don't look for a successor if you are happy with a game. You should have only one goal and that is to keep the scene and the game alive. Don't flame other games because they are not the same as your old loved game.
Quake Wars is a great game but it's no W:ET, it's not CoD and it's surely no BF2!
IT'S ENEMY TERRITORY:QUAKE WARS!!, A unique game in many aspects So PLEASE stop comparing it with whatever.
CONCLUSION: vehicles are overrated.
Besides, the depth is what makes etqw interesting. At bf2, there were even more vehicles which you couldnt do shit against on your own, but with good teamwork and timing you could overcome those problems. ET:QW is not a game for egotrippers, its for players who like to play together to accomplish common goals.
ET:QW is good imo
