A few months ago, I interviewed Sweden mintR after fnatic (at the time known as EYEballers) had won the Crossfire QCUP with an impressive performance. If you had asked me back then how CDC4 would play out in relation to the CoD4 tournament, I would have laughed and said “You’re kidding me, right?” That was then and unsurprisingly enough, this is now. After a fairly recent and shocking exit from the CoDQCUP, was my early faith somewhat misplaced in these Swedish giants?

At the time of that interview, I asked if the recent lineup changes would affect the team’s chances to win CDC4. Back then, Sweden mintR seemed to be fairly contempt with being able to replace Sweden zEm and Sweden wnkr with Sweden tidde and Sweden Klanne, claiming that these new recruits slotted nicely into the team and had done nothing but “impress” him.

From a pundits point of view on the other hand, this seems the main contributing factor to fnatic’s demise in the CoDQCUP. Losing to the eventual winners THE6DEVILS may not be considered as a bad result for fnatic but these Swedes have impeccably high standards and expectations to go along with them.

The great thing about the CoD4 scene at the moment though, is the shear amount of competition out there. There are at least five or six teams you could mention with having a chance for this title and you can never discount a team such as fnatic, with the credentials and history that they have together. At every event, you will always have the big name teams flirting with the top end of the proceedings but the CoD tournament could throw up all sort of surprises, with teams like GUMMI lurking in the background.

It’s all to play for and fnatic have to go back to the drawing board to try and salvage something from the recent CoDQCUP. The problem with fnatic is however, the fact they have changed their winning formula. Of course, the new guys Sweden mintR brought in are great players in their own rights but the reason fnatic achieved so much was because of the relationship those players had with each other in the old lineup. They knew exactly what any man would do in any given situation. This was their main strength. It got them through games were they didn’t play their best. That’s a sign of a truly great team. Being able to progress through games where you don’t play at your best.

I don’t feel the new players have had enough time to gel with the old ranks and leaving the CoDQCUP at such an early juncture wouldn’t have helped matters either. These Swedes are going to need some serious practice to get back their crown as favorites. The only comfort fnatic fans could take from this, is the fact the team has been here before and with Sweden mintR’s experience, they can hopefully turn their CDC4 preparations around.

Maybe by talking to one of the recent CoDQCUP winners Germany/Austria iFEARdilemma, I could shed some light on the subject at hand.

Scotland Pedro : I don’t know what to make of fnatic’s recent performances, it’s such a fall from grace. How do you think fnatic will do At The CDC4 event?

Germany/Austria iFEARdilemma : Oh, I think fnatic will do well. They have made a bootcamp or will do before the LAN. So I think they will be one of the favourites. Nosway & sniperfix will be activated at the LAN and fnatic|mint + sniperfix equals pure rapeness. Nosway will strengthen them even further as well because it fits so well into their game style.

Scotland Pedro : The field is wide open for the event, it’s the most exciting CoD tournament to date by far. With the changes fnatic have made in the squad, the victory ship may have sailed off into the sunset. Has it?

Germany/Austria iFEARdilemma : I don’t think so. The problem is it’s the first major LAN event so you can’t really say which teams will be strong there because CoD will have another feeling when you play it on a LAN. A surprise package could win the event, so I will be careful with my predictions. Fact is, every team which attends is more or less a top team. There isn’t much separating the very top teams and the rest of the field. So you can’t really anticipate how LAN events will go until there have been at least three events of the same nature.

Germany/Austria iFEAR mentioned fnatic participating in their Roskilde Ravens Clubhouse boot camp which they did and as a result, went on to win the RandomCup against Speelink with what looked like a very close and fascinating final. The full story can be found here.

It looks like the Swedes are coming good, at the exact right time. Hopefully the other teams vying for the CDC4 crown will have put in just as much effort, as we’ll have one hell of a competition on our hands.

Good luck to fnatic!
