What makes a good admin and what defines an admin?
These are questions that I will try to find an answer to within this column. I would like to strengthen the fact that this column will include a lot of my personal opinions and views.
Not anyone is fit for the position as an admin. It can be a matter of interest of course, but not everyone would put themselves in that position with many eyes watching their every move and judging every decision made. Instead, not having to take so much responsibility and rely more on others decisions would be their cup of tea. There are certain characteristics that are easily spotted in the person that seems to want to be more in the spotlight. It's not necessarily a question about wanting the attention or recognition though. I believe that it's mainly about your own capabilities and how you are as a person that will put you in a position further up in the community hierarchy. "Well, duh." You might say, but I believe that this is a quite interesting topic and a quite topical thing to discuss at the moment. Which leads us back to the two questions asked above, "What makes a good admin?" and "What defines an admin?"
I’ll just keep on typing here and see where this takes me. I’m not sure that I’ll be able to put my finger on the answer, but hopefully this could spur some interesting debate.
An admin would need to have some form of diplomatic skill and a will to make sure that you can put your own interests aside in order to make that the users of your, for example One Day Cup or community happy. You can’t however make everyone happy, I’ve experienced that myself which has rendered me clueless as to how I should act in certain situations. This is where someone diplomatic and impartial can step in and most often take a decision which could benefit both sides in some way. A professional admin can always back up his decisions and confront whatever problems the decisions might cause.
An admin should also be capable of being a good role model. Even online where retards can hide behind their computer screens and act up anyway they want, there’s no need for an admin to lower themselves to their level. That we’ve seen happen numerous times here on Crossfire, which has only left the admin with a stained reputation.
Flexibility is another great characteristic which can prove vital for any admin. Being able to change in order to make sure that everything can progress steadily, or change because you’ve been criticized is something I believe an admin must be capable of.
Language is another thing which, at least for me, makes a lot of difference. Seeing as we are online the written word is far more vital than it’d be in real life where you can just speak up about what’s on your mind. As an admin you need to show confidence and intelligence in the way you choose to reply. An admin will by most people be judged within minutes, their view of the person in question may change over time, but making a good first impression by handling the written word well will earn respect. It shows how serious and educated the person is. Then there’s also the fact that you, by being an admin, in most cases represent a organization of some sort. By keeping news posts and replies professional it will make the person in question look more serious, but also the community itself which will attract more people.
It’s important that you can maintain a high level of professionalism, but I guess I must also strengthen the fact that we’re online. There are loads of idiots and trolls whose biggest desire is nothing more than being a pain in the neck for any admin, most likely looking for some attention themselves. Keeping a high level of professionalism is hard, especially in this environment.
There aren’t really that many differences between leadership IRL and online, there are certain factors that play bigger roles though and depending on how well you play your cards and make your moves you’ll earn respect within a group or a community. This isn’t rocket science, and I’m not claiming that I’m the one who has come up with these things, I’m merely typing out what I think and believe.
Let’s try not to make the comment area into a admin-grading section, I’d very much like to see as few names mentioned as possible unless you have good personal experiences from dealing with certain admins and would like to mention and praise them for their work. There are loads of pro’s and con’s to discuss, so what are for you the most important characteristic with a good admin? Do you have any examples? It could be from anywhere over the net.

I think I haven't even written anything about that in public, which is a shame. It was so retarded it was funny.
example of a bad admin: krosan
:-)))))))))))
example of a bad admin: krosan, frop, baggiez, chosen, ronner
+1
whatever i did created drama and kept the scene alive
(Getting prizes back to EC, giving the community a good anti-cheat, try to keep cheaters away, teach the community etc etc not i even remember all the things i did anymore, its all past histroy :P)
when i signed up, i had those objectives in mind, so in the end, i took the hard decision, eventhough sometimes i regret it because ET's comp scene is really dying and coverage is poor, almost no hype and having a noshow ec final says enough about ETs current state)
also the constant DDoSing helped my decision, you got to be some mentally fucked chap to do that.
come back to ET
You did some good work back then, shame you've gone all quiet ;)
and it's not really my or your business but, speedlink didn't give ALL they promised to chaplja, they only paid the initial free and maybe some hardware but after that they left him out in the cold for some months, chaplja is doing it voluntarily since december or more.
But afterwards wp.
:P
Bad admin: age == 16
good admins
enuff said
Too biased all the time. Helped his polish friends too much.
but a good admin without a doubt - GET BACK(or build yet another EU lineup, avi^^)
That's one of the reasons as to why I started writing on this, people don't appreciate the hard work put down by admins. But then when people actually do it makes the effort worth it, that's easily forgotten though however.
Crossfire is definitely in need of improvement, but it'd be a sinking ship if all hard working admins here gave in to peoples whine and stupidity.
I prefer human admins, but this community is so ridiculously childish even after so many years that I really think you have to be a bit crazy to put up with all that shit.
@[CB]doneX: crittie has a yellow card now
greetz Marimekko
I. Sol evolved to chosen
II. chosen to Baggiez
III. Baggiez to Krosan
IV. Krosan to Frop
Every step they are getting more cruel and more ruthless.
at least i didnt notice u
Many players that play in both ESL/CB do not bother to read the rules that these leagues have. The admins work for the players, but they also need to respect certain rules. Not many players understand the decisions that admins make sometimes because they cannot go over some very important rules or because they don't want to lose their status because players could easily say they took that decision because the admin was a friend of that team.
On the other hand, a good admin should be able to explain his decisions. That's very vital.
I'm sure that ET has/had some very good admin, but some of them will surely leave the scene because of the increased flame that they get for an actually good decision(considering the rules). That's too bad, imo...

And again, +1.
The thing is, sometimes, when You meet idiots or trolls whose biggest desire is nothing more than being a pain in the neck for admin, they don't even want to listen to You, while You are trying to explain Your decision. The only thing they can do, is say how much You, in their meaning, suck and nothing more.
ergo: Baggiez is the best admin.
a bad admin made ET 5o5
Tosspot is my example.
