It's not toxic this time, but TAG long timer overdrive. Landmine specialist, and engineer god, overdrive tells us about his experiences thus far.
How're you finding the lan so far?
It's been good so far, especially the organisation. I guess it's been better than the last ones. We were a bit afraid on Thursday; we did a mix bootcamp, but there were so many problems like sound being messed, pc's not booting etc., but magically (thanks Adacore!) everything got fixed the next day and things got back on track.
How do you feel you'll be coping with the competition?
We kind of hoped to win against v&e but we knew our chances were slim. I guess we only had the target to make playoffs, which we've already done, so we're pretty satisfied. We've got to beat zeroE to move on now, and we're not so much afraid, but we know that's a big challenge. They've got an aim based play style, and add players like Domi who confuse things by not selfkilling when he should and making things that little bit less predictable.
Who're your main opponents in the tournament?
Our main opponent is ourselves because we've played pracs and seeding matches against mamut and actually won a few maps. When we analysed our game it was all about us not making the mistakes we did as a team, so our target was to improve on our mistakes. To us it's not about how well our opponent is playing, but about how few mistakes we make.
Which team do you want to beat more than the others and why?
zeroE if Ronner was still with them! We got traumatised last LAN when we lost to him, so it would be nice to get revenge. There's no personal vendettas or anything though, so it's kind of fun rivalry.
What do you think you're chances would be against zeroE?
Radar we should win and we play nicely on the old spam maps like supply and goldrush, and we even manage to spam radar by playing it the way we do. They'll have the advantage on aiming maps like adlernest and delivery i guess, so maps will probably make the difference. Overall, i think we should win with the lineup we have. It'll mainly come down to me not screwing up.
When the pressure's was in your most challenging games who do you think will pull you through?
rimi for sure, he's a really intelligent player and very experienced. He gives great calls on comms and he's reliable when he's the last man standing.D4
Who in particular do you want to see perform and why?
I'd like to see mAus play at LAN like always, he's just a machine. I'd also like to see butchji and Squall play well too. They've never proved themselves on LAN.
Is there any particular player or team you think will surprise?
I don't see many surprises coming - The top 3 is kind of decided, but the seedings made sure of that. There's going to be some smaller clans who play above their level like AoW and f2k. To us having been at the LANs for a while, but these guys want to prove themselves as the new guys in the scene. It's great to see all the new faces next to the old ones.
Which team do you think may not live up to their expectations?
Epsilon i guess, since they've got the 'megapro syndrome', meaning they're too heavy on aim and lacking the objective players like Clown. gifty is a good rifle, but he's not like XyLoS, aCoZz or Lightning so they're missing the top engineers and spam.
Is there any player that you think may not live up to their expectations?
I was expecting some of the aimers to play worse than they do online, but it doesn't seem the case. Not because they're cheating online, but the settings, equipment, screens etc.
Who do you think you will learn the most from this LAN?
Lightning, since he's a good friend and he gives a lot of advice. He's willing to think outside of the box, try new stuff. He's actively giving advice and it helps a lot. Next to that, i love to spec toxic on LAN, since you can see stuff you can't on ETTV, like his use of the command map.
Is there any particular player you don't look forward to playing against?
zeroE's Domi & joop, since i personally hate playing against them. They're 3v3 players with really good aim, and they play in unpredictable, annoying style, and their aim is very difficult for me to play against.
Do you feel that aim is more or less important on LAN than it is online?
For me aim is the magic trick, since it can make the game more simple, and help you get out of sticky situations. When you play the spam roles you're always timing, but aiming for me is not something natural, so i need to play a lot to shoot consistently, and changing from CRT to TFT is killing whatever aim is left. As a spammer, i kind of rely on the spread, but on LAN it doesn't work, so you need to be really accurate, and you're way more hittable and it does make the gameplay different - It's more direct and aggressive. I feel that the confident players normally have an advantage too.
Are there any up and coming player's to look out for?
I didn't have the time to watch many games so far, but with our games being finished i'm really looking forward to speccing some more. It's nice to see the shoutcast is back in the cafe. It's a little annoying when you're playing, but you don't notice it much after a while. It really adds to the atmosphere of the LAN being able to stand behind the players and watch on the big screen. I also really look forward to the EC finals.
