Help with achieveing x264 codecs quality

Recently i've invested some time into producing a frag movie, but have found I render the movie in the worst quality with the x264. Yes I have recorded in game footage with the highest gfx settings AA/AF and all that... so wondering if there are any other guides or such around for achieving the best from this codec? Or if any of you have settings that you wish to share.
