Deux Ex: Human Revolution

Hi,

The original Deux Ex was fantastic. Has anybody tried the new release? Care to share your thoughts?

I heard the new game was terrible but these are just rumours.

Haven't installed yet but a friend of mine said that it was one of the best games he had played recently.
all I've heard are boners
Well i enjoyed that a massive amount :D thank you, also

heeeyyy giiiirrrlll!!! <3

play it, very good game but not the best I've ever played
wouldn't say terrible but it's anything but great.

the mix of shooter and rpg elements just didn't work out for me here as they did in fallout 3 for example.
too much shooting to be a rpg
too much talking to be a shooter

graphics and design look pretty outdated plus there is absolutely no love for detail with tons of generic objects.

the best part of the game is basically the story which is pretty catchy and there's lots of bonus backround material to look out for if you spend enough time.

i'd say it's nice for deus ex fanboys, other than that, it's gonna be quite a disappointment for the majority of players.
You can finish the game without killing a single enemy (except fr bosses).
I'll concur, RPG elements are heavily casualized, but that's what's happening in every game right now apparently and definitely not the focus of the game, since it's story based.

well the idea of playing the game in splinter cell manner is nice, but then it's basically just a cheap and loveless copy.
Parent
Admittedly, I only played the first Splinter Cell, but I never had the feeling that copied that at all. And the fact that you get to choose makes the difference after all. Splinter Cell always felt to me like you have to find the one way the developers wanted you to find, whereas in DE:HR you'll either:
-Shoot everyone in plain sight and rush through
-Shoot everyone from cover
-Stealthily attack everyone from behind, recharge batteries, repeat
-Cloak yourself, sneak around the enemies
-Find secret passage, hack computers and find passwords
Parent
you forgot;
-walk through the whole game carrying a hacked turret in front of you

e: watched a friend playing through some of it yesterday, he killed every single police officer in the detroit station :D
Parent
did that too trololol, ninja style ofc
best part is when the newspaper writes about it and only the body u had to find was mentioned :D
Parent
hahahaha :D

if you hack her pc it arrived weeks ago and she's just being racist so quite justified tbh
Parent
dont get me wrong, i do like the combination of the different playing styles.
i like the idea behind de:hr a lot, but it just has some shortfalls you can't conceal.

- im no graphic junkie but what de:hr has to offer is almost a shame for a 2011 release.
- ego-perspective lacks almost everything: no shadows, feels like you hover over the ground like in "back in days" shooters, no animations for crouch/jump/etc actions
- almost every video sequence is out of sync (which is a absolute no-go)

if they would've put as much love for detail in the actual game as they put into the storyline and a release on an up to date graphic engine and de:hr would've been one of the best sp games of the last years.
Parent
bullshit, this is the first fps engine in a very long time that i've really enjoyed... (although the mouse input needs work) it's a lot better than most other fps games that are around at the moment

the first deus ex is the pinnacle of sp fps, nothing will ever beat it and it's unrealistic to expect dx:hr to do that, but it definitely honours it well

the thing that makes it great isn't just the story, it's the way it approaches you the player, you are treated as someone capable of making decisions unlike modern shooters which treat you like a moron and offer no challenge. standard shooters force you into one path with the objective "kill everything". deus ex gives you an objective and tells you nothing about the path(s), you get there, you scout and then you decide how you want to go about it. you could storm the front, you could stealthily take down each guard or fuck you can even go a block away, climb an adjacent building and jump onto the fire escape
Parent
as if the idea to choose from various paths and to make up your mind wether you wanna be the bad or the good guy is that new.
Parent
The difference between this and Fallout 3 is that DXHR is a shooter with RPG elements, while Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns an RPG with shooter elements.

Frankly though, while the stealth gameplay did remind me of the new Splinter Cell (which was a big disappointment, btw, and not loyal to the series at all) with the cover system and whatnot, the stealth combined with the plot and the setting was more like Metal Gear Solid.

I'd say the game has two faces: if you played it as a shooter, it resembled Mass Effect quite a bit, and if you played it as a sneaker guy, it was like a first-person MGS. Both of those faces were very good, although the plot was a bit of a deja vu from other near-future scifi stories.

Overall, it's a worthy successor to the original Deus Ex.

Quote- almost every video sequence is out of sync (which is a absolute no-go)

I didn't notice this, are you sure it wasn't a bug or something caused by lag or a poor crack?
Parent
might just occur in the german version, read quite a lot of reviews where people complain about sync problems.
Parent
The cut scenes are messed up anyways because the game was developed by Eidos while the cut scenes were made by Square Enix. That's why they look different as well.

E: But I never noticed they were out of sync either.

Oh lol, I was wondering the sudden changes in the lighting and such when the game transitioned from cutscene to regular animation. That explains it.

I liked it a lot actually. It's one of the few games I do feel like I can choose between going full rambo and Solid Snake. During practically every objective you can either search for hackable computers and/or the necessary passwords or just shoot your way through. The fact that almost every sequence of the game mixes civilians with enemy forces adds another strategic element to the game. The AI of course has its shortcomings (pick up vending machine, hide behind it, enemy wonders where you are) but its still far from being despicable. There is so much text that adds to the backstory that, along with the racism, makes it feel like a BioWare title (ME, DA etc). Another perk of the game is that you're bound to miss out on quite a few side quests unless you check EVERY corner of the map. Even though the design is pretty generic at times, I like the mixture of grungy streets and clean cut business buildings.

I'd suggest you check it out yourself and considering everyone probably expected it to suck, it, from my point of view, lives up to the original Deus Ex, unlike DE2.
i liked it, will probably replay it one day to see how different the storyline could have been..

the only thing that annoyed me about it was the unavoidable boss fights which didn't feel in spirits with the original but everything else was good, not as good as the first game but still really good and not a disappointment like invisible war
Friend who loves Deus Ex said it sux.
As I'm a kilt wearing, tight fisted bastard... I only like to buy games which are good. I'll have a look at a few screenshots and see how it is, good comments though guys!

Anybody fans of bioshock too? I must jus thave to polish off my copy and see if I can complete it!
Parent
the first bioshock is fucking fantastic

not played the second yet
Parent
i thought it was a nice game.
Was really fan of the first ep, never played the second. Human Revolution reminds me a lot of the first ep, which is very nice. Only played it a few hours yet but I think it's a bit weaker than the original one, but still it's a great game.
Yeah i've just started playing it, really awesome, i've only got up to the part where you fight Barratt.
absolutely worth playing.
best game in the last 11 years
one of the few games i finished
From what I've gathered it has gotten quite good reception among critics. Looks promising as I got high expectations on Eidos Montreal seeing as their next title to release will be Thief 4!
which I read will be on the dx:hr engine!
Parent
I've been following the "development" of Thief 4 for the last couple of years. And that has been discussed, it would obviously be the most logical choice. Where'd you read that particular information?

It's been dead quiet from EM's side since it was announced (May 2009). Seeing as Deus Ex turned out quite nice people have started getting their hopes up again though. Hopefully EM will be willing to share something soon as well to make up for their shit marketing so far :>

One should also consider that the game is done entirely by two different teams at the studio, let's just hope they share equal skill and knowledge :)
