You should buy Austria beAsty's laptop he has for sale...

HERE

:)
nice laptop but quite expensive :x

nah.. 399€ is pretty cheap. Similiar laptops without the SSD go for 400-600€.. the SSD is ~180€ new. Also asked in a forum and they told me what price range that laptop is in. Will see how much I get :)

I'm saving money to repair my gaming laptop, if I could effort the money I'd but yours but too bad I'm a poor fuck. lol
Parent
Your battery is gonna let you down there but I guess you dont have a great deal of choice. However, throw in an SSD and you've got a beast of a laptop!
depends on what you expect from the battery.. I feel fine enough with 2 hours of battery live and thats smth he should be able to get without problems. Turning down everything for power saving + only doing some browsing/word/excel stuff should give him even more time.

6 cell battery + Dedicated Graphics + 7200 RPM drive = -60 Minutes battery life
Parent
the Sager NP5160 has pretty much the same specs and many (user) reviews state that 2-3 hours are what you can get with its 6 cell battery.

What laptops is it, where do u buy it, how much do you pay?

be sure to check out xoticpc.com & malibal.com

they have very good offers.

For the SSD: I dont know how much money you want to spend but I would/will go for the Intel 510 120GB. If you want smth cheaper (but also slower in "real-world" situations" ) get the crucial m4.
He should rather invest on a SSD equipped with the latest sandforce controller hence e.g. the OCZ Vertex 3 120 Gb costs over 70 euro less here in Finland and it's also faster.
Parent
sandforce controller = no thanks (too unreliable)

if you want some cheap but fast & reliable SSD, get the crucial m4
if you want smth even faster & much more balanced & reliable, get the intel 510
Parent
What's the price?
No need for the i7 unless you plan to do crazy stuff with it.
In games you won't notice any difference to an i5. So if there's a cheaper i5 version of the laptop, you could easily go for this one instead.
SSD isn't worth the extra investment either right now.
Parent
and why is that?
Parent
I got one myself, but I don't think the occasional performance boost (based on average use of a computer) justifies the price. It's luxury at this point in time.
Parent
Which one did you get? Following some benchmark comparisons and buying the cheapest & best benchmark score SSD won't bring you much performance in "real-world" working. And there are many SSD's which aren't any better than HDD's but have awesome benchmark results. I bought the Intel Postville X25 M G2 when it came out and starting programs / working in windows 7 was much much faster. These days there are already faster SSD's like the Intel 510 series.
Parent
I have one of the newer Intel 510s. Sure, it's nice it boots really fast and that I'm the first one on the server, but like I said that's just the occasional performance boost. Unless you're CAD/CAMming, rendering or doing any other heavy multimedia bullshit 24/7 I really don't see any reasons to get one (yet). I've slapped a WD 1TB SATA-III in there too and I'm pretty confident it's fast enough for most people.
Parent
Don't have any experience with that kind of working on a SSD so I could only tell what reviews say (which is that SSD's are better than HDD'S ;D). I guess you know about the Intel SSD Toolbox. If not then you should download it. It changes some settings in windows 7 to optimize the speeds + TRIM's automatically (which gives a nice improvement again).

For me the SSD is worht it just because of how much faster windows 7 and all the programs (that I use) work & react.
Parent
True enough, but the loading time of an application is only a minute percentage of the time you're actually using it. The fact that (for example) my Windows 7 boots 30 seconds faster isn't going to make much of an impact on the long run.
Parent
I don't get all this hype of the booting times anyway.. my laptop goes to sleep/hibernation mode.. and maybe gets restarted every 2-4 weeks once :S And its not just about the startup process of programs (which ofc is only a minor time amount compared to the time you use the program) but also the program itself reacts faster. And you dont just start one program. Generally I start skype, mirc, msn, firefox, thunderbird, displayfusion pro, comodo internet security, mbam pro whenever I start my laptop. Then security programs will gain a lot of performance thanks to the fast ssd. In my opinion simply everything works way faster with the SSD.. even the click on the start button or browsing the C: drive (SSD). The indexing in windows 7 is working so much faster. And I use the indexing feature every time I run/open anything (win key -> panasonic -> enter key -> panasonic-manual.pdf opens.. takes 2 seconds).

I wouldn't need a 120GB ssd.. 64 gb are enough for me (win7 + the standard programs). Everything else goes on the 750GB HDD. And 64/80 GB SSD's aren't that expensive. However, on my new laptop I will get a 120GB Intel 510 (as it is also faster than the smaller one) and then I will also put the games on it :P (which will bring a few fps compared to running it on a HDD.. but thats not really the reason why I go for the bigger one.. its just the speed).
Parent
My average Steam directory is already 60-80 GB, so that's why I got the 120 GB. I run my boot and games partitions on the SSD, everything else (data storage) on the WD 1TB. Games perform great and the loading times are awesome.

I haven't run a software antivirus/firewall solution since 2006 and I'm definitely not using the Windows Search/Index bullshit (one of the first things I disable after a clean Windows 7 install), so I can't really tell much about any performance boost in those departments.

"I'm the first one on the server"

Is there any greater prize than this?
Parent
After you've bought new "gaming" hardware? Nothing compares!

And in the case of Battlefield 3 it's even better because you're able to spawn directly in a jet at the start of a round (now if only the jets were actually useful).
Parent
i could get this for 1k. + ssd. And its for work :D but indeed, bad point of it is the battery :s
what kind of work? cad? random office stuff? coding?

generally for working I would get 17"
The gfx card is a bit overpowered for working only? :P
Willl you really need the 750gb or would an 120gb ssd + 250gb hdd be enough ?
You should check out some reviews of this laptop & its battery life.
Parent
its for random office work. But mostly I dont have to move it, so I can keep it in recharge. And yeah that screen is small, but we orderd external screen for it also. Hehe, maybe a bit over power tho :p But I can get this machine to home after work xD
Parent
alright nice :) which SSD did u go for?
Parent
I dont remember specific specs of it anymore, lol :D It was from Kingston :p I'll let u know later :)
Parent
Kingston HyperX? Great speed but sandforce controller which isn't that reliable yet :/
