There is a difference between online and "Offline".
When i met someone, then it is much easier to talk with them, because you can see her gesture and you know when something is wrong or not. At least it is easier than if you chat with someone, because there every word she writes could be taken wrong.
There is also a difference, if you know someone for real or if you just chat with strangers
That's the exact reason why chatting to someone is so much easier than talking. You have ages of time to think of a respond, you don't have to think about posture/how you look and everything you say you can explain as "misinterpreted".
Its not just about having balls or not. its also about annoying people, knowing when it is the right point to pm them etc etc
