gfx card dead? *UPDATE*

what the fuck is this s**t???

I was photoshopping and suddenly everything froze, nothing worked so had to reboot my pc via the power button. when it booted up again i checked the device manager to see if anything(aka my gfxcard) had malfunctioned, and indeed in the device manager it said my video card had been stopped for an error[Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)] Tried the rollback option which didn't lead me to anywhere. Next i went for system recovery to start with the last working settings, but now it wont go any further than trying to boot up windows and then restarting again...in an infinite loop...

Since i've never encountered anything like this before, does anyone have a clue if it's actually my gfxcard that has malfunctioned(or died?) or could this be somesort of a virus?

Should i try a format or do i need to look into getting a new gfxcard?

ps. my gfxcard is nvidia geforce 8600gt, it's umm...least 2 years old :/

ps2. typing on laptop after not used it for ages is ridiculous.

******UPDATE******

took my gfxcard out and cleaned the excessive dust.

meanwhile i also discovered another gfxcard in my closet, that i had mate bought a new card himself so he asked if i'd want his old one...and i took it! from a mate. but i realised it's too image: 11uf0js to fit inside my pc :/

i then looked into fixing my 8600gt with the solution Finland Burneddi brought up, but before really putting it in the oven and cocking it up i thought i'd just give it a final try.
and for my surprise my pc booted up, it did give me a error message saying:
System Fan Has Failed!
Service PC to prevent damage to the system.

and now it's working, for how long...we'll have to wait and see.

cheers for all the help!

Take the battery (looks like a clockbattery) out of your graficcard and wait 1 minute. Then put it back and restart your comupter. Your graficcard should be reseted now..

helped me already some times.

good luck with your problem
Did u try to boot the pc without the gfxcard already? If it works without it, the card probably died and you have to get a new one.
currently in progress of removing the gfxcard, will give that a shot

Also you fag!
nice showing off your burton stickers!

also, I think you are addicted to format your pc every 2nd day, and now you're making up things so you can format yet again!

tonight pracc btw, no excuses! :D

oh, and gl.
'investigating' the cause of this shit right now, might go and get a new gfxcard if that's the problem, or then i'll play from another pc(or from this laptop :D)

i once had a very similar problem and it turned out to be a screen problem...
Micro-cracks in the solderings of the card (the memory, to be more exact), a trademark error with the GTX 8600/8800.

You can fix it by putting it in the oven. No shit.
lol wtf should have knkown that before, gonna try with my 8800GT see if it works ^^

apparently mine decided to work again without baking it, but do tell me if yours works after this...remedy.
Parent
will prolly do it somewhere next week if i cba!

PC being left on for long time + not being cleaned for a long time = gpu fan death or injury (:D) make sure if is not locked in place and can turn and dust it off a bit.

It wont fix your problem (if it is this) but it will help in the future - I had a gpu burnout because of this :( was like space invaders on the screen.
i never really leave my PC on, i might max. 6 hours straight in a day + i had recently formatted my PC and cleaned the inside from dust last week o_O

That is a good sign then, at least you have ruled the above out :) hopefully it isnt fried.. rather annoying if so especially on the obsolete series, brother had something similair was difficulat to replace his card. GL.
