I'll toss out some random observations for you. On a couple of older Asus boards I've had, a very brief power glitch would reset the computer, and the keyboard wouldn't work until I 'formally' rebooted.
I had one Asus board that would tell me various things: system failed CPU test; system failed memory test; system failed VGA test. The board was in its death throes. But it sounds like yours may be OK--you're getting past the POST screen.
I suspect the power glitch that may have caused your keyboard not to be recognized corrupted a Windows file on your hard drive. Try doing a repair of Windows. Be careful! You want to repair Windows, not do a complete reinstall and lose all your data and settings.

Take brother's video card, test in your computer.
