phone unlocking

Any idea what actually gets unlocked, the phone or the SIM card?

I'm using a Samsung Jet which is pretty old, contract is up in April.

..so I want a new phone but to keep the same SIM card (+contract)

How would I go about this?

save contacts on sim, get a sim-lock free phone and you're good.
by "sim-lock free" do you mean unlocked?

would ask my mommy to change the contract and probably pay for it myself
need to save for holidays, plus it's a good contract :p

If your phone is locked to a network it means that the boot sector of the phone is 'told' for want of a better word not to allow communication from an unprovisioned sim. This means that any sim not carrying that networks signature will not work. Your sim will work in phone that allows your network. The 'sim lock' basically means 'network lock' and it's referring to the handset.
get new phone contact current network provider for a PUK code and use that to keep your number on the new simcard/phone?

E: reading again you want a new phone on the same contract? contact to provider? who you with surely theres some deal on the site?
well I want an unlocked phone so I can put my SIM card (from my current phone) in :)

yeah you dont have to worry about this if thats the situation but sounds like you are happy with your carrier? so just renew your contract with them you can keep your number etc and they will let you pick a new handset at discounted/free price depending on what your contract costs / month

you might be able to haggle a lower price or better allowances or smth if you do it by phone or in store (assuming its a store affiliated with the network ofc)
