where can I find eVo? He is offline for ages already on irc (@ #unkind & #impact.gaming) :/
Anyone out there who knows a lot about networks/router/modems/etc ? Special reward for you if you can fix my problem:
My internetprovider gave me a fritzbox (modem + router in one). Getting access to the internet is impossible without the modem inside that crappy thing. The router itself isn't that bad.. just too weak for my network (as it is too big) and as far as I know it can't really handle my network speed (shit provider doesn't have anything else).
So I thought about building my own router out of an old homeserver with pfSense.
Fritzbox (modem/router) -> Router (pfSense) -> PCs
Would that mean the fritzbox's usage isn't as high anymore as the pfSense router is actually managing the network (dhcp,priorities,....)? Currently my fritzbox's CPU usage is at 89% -.-
Also I belive the fritzbox can't handle the amount of open connections that my network has. E.g. my HTPC with utorrent.exe alone has 500 outbound & 400 inbound connections. One device of 3-4 which runs torrents. Not to mention the 5 other laptops/PC's/mobile phones/etc

Still shit for nerding, movies, music, generally everything on the internet -_-
cant you change again?
and no, cant change back since they dont provide that speed connections anymore
wonder what kind of network you are having, if you fritzbox is too weak for it.
a router being a dhcp really doesn't require many resources, so moving it shouldn't solve your problem.
whats your connection speed and amount of clients on your network?
I have ~5-10 clients running in my network:
1x HTPC with ~300 torrents running 24/7
1x Home-Server which has like 4TB of HDD inside and shares it to the whole network.. also ftp server running on it and sometimes torrents
1x mac mini.. torrents again + ftp + internet TV and 7800 other stuff
1x mac laptop (that guy is doing general working/gaming with it)
1x my windows laptop
1x another windows laptop from work
1x iPhone
1x Android Phone
1x PC
2x WLAN-Hubs/Switches
xbox360
... I hope I didn't forget anything.
Using port forwarding, priorities, dhcp,... I think the main problem is the amount of open connections. Looking at my HTPC with the 300 torrents I already have ~300-500 outbound and 200-400 inbound connections. Maybe it's just too much stuff coming from too many devices for the fritzbox. It's actually built for 4 devices + 8mbit download speed (although this router is even used by my provider for speed > 20 mbit).
Besides that, the second router (or generally new router) would also be nice due to enhanced security features (DD-WRT,pfSense,untangle,... whatever I would use.. they offer a lot of plugins/addons/features).
guess your problem is indeed the amount of open connections in combination with QoS. doubt there's a way around a more powerful router. sure you could use a pc for that, instead, if you don't care about power consumption.
guess your ftp runs in a DMZ(well...since you seem to sofar not use a firewall...something a bit like that)? in that case you really should get something different than a fritzbox. though if it's used in the same LAN and not different subnets you should just connect it to a switch instead.
set proper routing settings
