Technic is essentially a ‘brand’ of modpack for Minecraft. What was once a po-dunk ‘copy these files to your Minecraft directory’ has become an open-source Spout-based launcher that does all the heavy lifting for you.

you can actually play cracked vanilla MC SMP with a nick loader and hamachi.
you have to have an original MC account to play tekkit, so it somewhat is less of a hack than the original itself.
what it is is the SMP compatible version of the technic pack which is a mod collection of industrialcraft, buildcraft, railcraft, redpower2, equivalnt exchange and many more.
if vanilla MC is a burnt microscopic muffin this is a luxury wedding cake.
actually I don't really know about vanilla servers and stuff. just heard of bukkit which seems to be a 'plugin handler' (correct me if I am wrong but only if you like to). however, the spelling of tekkit lets one assume, that it might be something similar to the term mentioned above.
Just wanted to tell you, that a couple of friends and me decided to rent a server just for us and we have no plugins installed and we will not add any of them. it is still pretty fun.

un-modded MC is quite fun for a while (for most of us that while has been years ago) but simply lacks content to be played more than a couple of days.
building stuff for the sake of looking at it is nowhere near as good as building complexe machinery and whole self-sustaining systems take expand as far as the eye can see.
