hdd/file recovery?

someone i know needs a recovery program for his old hdd! he says he did a format but there is still a couple old files on there somehow, anyways he said he's done a recovery before and got all files back but doesn't remember the program name. any ideas? im going to college today and gonna ask the same from one of my teachers who knows a bit about this stuff, cu later!
