I was playing pokemon silver back then, I was a bit sad when I found out I lost my emulator and saves :(
Lugia / Ho-oh / Entei / Suicune / Tyranitar / Dragonite
as backup Aerodactyl, Ampharos (there were few more I bothered to get to 80+ level and were decent in fights but cant remember). Unfortunatelly I never caught Raikou :(
for catching other pokemons, Scyther is very good (he has attack which leaves enemy with 1hp but never kill) + some random pokemon with hypnosis.
could you give me advices on pokemons to catch to defeat the league? am still not in the second world and i can't get pokemons such as tyrannitar or legendaries..
Ah yeah, silly me I overtook the German name, ours are different to the English name. You're right Tyrannitar is the English name and its also the best non uber Pokemon in Gold/Silver.
Ye, he is awesome, as well as Dragonite, I had both of them in my main lineup. However there werent many situation when I could use full potential of all of them since the only good fight in gold/silver is put up by Ash, and I think it can be taken only once :(
Well I used to battle a lot with my friends. Was rather funny when I used Tyranitar against them for the first time. Always smashed at least 2 of their Pokemons until it was defeated, 2 weeks later everyone of them was leveling it haha.
I don't really like Dragonite, its okay but I never rly used it. My team usually looked like this:
well, there is no way to get mew/mewtwo or legendary birds in gold/silver without using cheats or trading, so I have never used those. And same goes for celebi. And I never thought of using Nidoqueen, didnt seem to be that strong.
Haha yeah, thats the advantage of having pokemon addicted friends. Transfered my Nidoqueen, Mew and Mewtwo from my Red Edition and traded Celebi and Zapdos for a clone of my Mew and my Tyranitar. Considering its stats Nidoqueen indeed wasn't really the best pick, but it used to be my favourite Pokemon after having seen Gary's Nidoqueen :P, so I once took it in my team and never put it out again. Funny enough it always had a suprise effect on the enemy cause they could never guess what kind of attacks it could learn. Celebi was definitely cheated, whereas Mew could be caught in Blue / Red etc. :O)

btw i tried my old gold edition, savegame still avi, so i checked it out last savegame consists of this team.
and also in the 2nd town from the old world there was some fighting arena where you can fight once per day against either a preset guy or the team of the player you were connected to last.
that was the only gym I was training in. I somehow got that bug with clock, it got reseted everytime I turned off the game, so I could train there how often I wanted :)
Pokemon you can catch pretty much in the starting zones:
- Mareep (Ampharos is a decent Electric type Pokemon)
- Wooper (Quagsire is a decent Water (Ground) Pokemon)
- Of the starters I'd recommend either Typhlosion or Meganium. Probably leaning more towards Typhlosion as he helps you rape the 2nd gym more easily than Meganium will.
- Hoppip (Jumpluff can work alright in a team but he's more of a crazy strategy kind of Pokemon)
- Gastly (You'd have to trade to get Gengar)
Later on:
- Scyther/Scizor (You'd have to level a Ledyba/Ledian to 29/33 and Breed them to get Baton Pass and make these amazing though)
- Any of the Eevee evolutions, except Flareon. Choose whichever you like most. You don't get Baton Pass in Gold so you don't really need to wait with evolving Eevee. Umbreon is more of a staller.
- Alakazam is good, but you'd need to trade your Kadabra.
- Heracross is one of my favourites for raping GSC.
- Miltank is a really good Normal type Pokemon.
- Starmie is also a solid choice.
- You will also start encountering Legendaries now. Best of the legendaries are Suicune and Raikou. Raikou is probably one of the best Pokemon you can catch in the game.
Even later still:
- Kingdra (trade)
- Dragonite (you can gamble to get Dratini earlier)
- Porygon2 (trade)
- Blissey
- Snorlax
- Misdreavus
- etc. etc.
Some really sick lategame Pokemans:
- Tyranitar
- Lugia and Ho-oh, but Lugia has more rape potential
But if you want to beat the game just pick the starter you like the most and only level him. Keep some HM sluts. That's the easiest way to do it. :D

i currently have nidorino (25) pidgeotto (26) and meganium(35), am at the burning tower town, where the gym consists of ghost pokemons. i am thinking to keep the current pokemons and catch fire garydos, dartini(and evolve him to dragonite) and arcanine (which i don't know how to get yet)
am also thinking of getting abra and get him to kadabra, but i think it'd be a waste as i cant get alakazam?
Ah yeah you will get the Red Gyarados (shiny) soon enough at that lake. I think you can catch Growlithe under that town (Ecruteak or smth) in Gold, and use a firestone to evolve him. Arcanine is a sick pokemon, didn't think of him at all tbh. :D
Kadabra is still decent but a lot weaker than alakazam so maybe not really worth it. Tbh with that team you will stomp anything anyway in the game!

Get ditto and you have caught them all, not that hard tbh!
my 6 i played with against friends (all lvl100):
blissey, lugia, mew, snorlax, ho-oh, cantremember
i also had 250 pokemon's caught, i just didn't had celebi, and 2 years ago i saw that my savefile from cartridge is erased (internal battery dead :( )
