In a old Quake engine based games low DPI is preferred because you may experience negative acceleration with high DPI. Also you don't get any noticeable advantage with higher DPI.
i was always confused because mouses have bigger and bigger dpis nowdays and it was strange for me because most of ET players prefer to play on a low dpi...
Higher DPIs should be more precise but it doesn't matter what DPI you use, you won't see a difference. At least from my experience.
With high DPI you can do little fine movements like coloring a pixel in photoshop or so.
People use it obviously to change the speed of the cursor for example 1800 DPI for sniping 400 for anything else or so.
