Phone not charging

I've got an original HTC Desire here but since last night it won't charge at all.
So far I've tried 3 different cables, one a USB to the computer but no orange light coming on. Have taken the battery out and back in no luck, leaving the battery out and connecting the phone does nothing either.
Could it be battery or am I looking at something else?
I thought if I plugged the phone in without a battery it should still boot up when plugged in the mains
