Lag problem in ET

Two friends downloaded ET through ET-Pack (dl link from CF) and they both experience lag spikes every few seconds, these spikes happen even in main menu while they're not in the server. Any idea what's wrong and what to do to fix this ?

delete cf pack et and download clean version from Splashdamage website

Moving cursor continuously and it stops time to time.

Fixed it by turning off Threaded Optimization from NVIDIA Control Panel. Thanks for the help tho !

did they execute ET in win xp compatibilitymode? (right click on .exe - settings)
did they try to assign ET only one CPU? (Taskmanager)
otherwise try this installationpack: http://etkey.org/pages/enemy-territory-full-install-windows.php
