I would suggest you to actually go to some shop and see how the image looks.
Some TVs are fucking shit, but for that amount of money they probably shouldn't be that bad :D
Most of the shops adjust TV image settings in order to be able to sell "not so good ones" pretty well (especially big electronics chains, where you see dozens of TVs stacked next to each other). Plus lightning in those shops will not favor good image quality either. I would pick a TV based on comparative reviews in regulated testing environment rather than base my decision on what sellers wanted me to see in very light rooms. But if he gets a chance to judge TVs in some sort of show room, with proper lightning and calibration, then it would be fine.

stay with samsung!! i got also one from samsung ( same budget ) and have nothing to complain. Take a 3D TV i really enjoy watching 3D movies, they are even better (the quallity) then in cinema.
passive 3d or active? We got passive at my place and that rocks!

We bought a nice TV lately on a budget, Grundig 55" HD LED, smart tv 3d etc with it does the job
http://www.amazon.de/Grundig-55-VLE-822-LED-Backlight-Fernseher/dp/B00N3VN0OQ

Of course with your budget you'd be able to get a whole lot more out of it though. Just don't be fooled by paying more for those omgz 1293081023hz monit0r shit.
well what i know its a big difference in image quality on tvs.

panel types etc etc

From my experience looking and reading you're not going to notice a whole lot of difference between say 400hz and 1200hz.
Maybe it'll make a little difference watching fast paced scenes and easier on the eyes but still I found 200 to be more than enough for me plus casual console games with hdmi aren't going to benefit anyway with the 60hz it's at.

I did not own a TV in more than 7 years. Do you even lift?
Since when did this website turn into ebay?
LG Electronics 65UB950V overall good performance
Toshiba 55L7453DG gaming tv
both with native 100hz panel

... the samsung tvs you posted have fake software hz, the panels have mostly 50/60hz
