Urban Terror HD

As you may know, I have been writing a few journal entries about my plans to create a shooter based on Unreal Engine 4 but with Quake-like physics.

Urban Terror HD happens to be exactly that and after discussing it for a bit, it became clear quickly that it would make most sense to team up.

I think this is the perfect solution. Aside from Enemy Territory (which is covered nicely by Dirty Bomb IMO), the original Urban Terror is the other game which I would really love to see transferred to the next generation. And by teaming up, I don't have to limit myself to abstract graphics...

In a nutshell, the three big advantages of joining Urban Terror are:

- A larger dev team, which can provide great looking assets among other things
- An existing player community, which is extremely passionate about the game
- It will be free forever (though most likely HD will have purchasable cosmetic items)

The only downside is that I cannot make a living from it, but I have been thinking about doing contract work for a while anyway, and there is no better way to get experience (and references) with Unreal Engine for me right now. Of course ultimately I'd still love to be in a situation where I could work fulltime on the game, but who knows what possibilities open up if the game becomes a success. First things first.

Urban Terror gameplay is quite different from Enemy Territory in the end, so I expect that there won't be all that much interest in this over here and I will probably not post too much about it. Still, if you are interested in a game with old school quake physics and a focus on pure aim, I hope that you will keep an eye on the project and give it a try once we have something to show. Which shouldn't be too far off!

Sweet, only played the game shortly but enjoyed it a lot
urban terror is pretty nice i used to play it. physics are a lot better than db if u ask me. Its a mix between ET and CS ( Round based buying weapon at the start and so on) The community is pretty small but its been stable for years. It never got the attention it deserves imo.
+1 on everything

Cant really tell I didnt follow it for a while but u can look here for example
http://urban-zone.org/index.php?name=Competition&event=80

The public scene seemed always to be quite small though compared to ET

There are different game modes like CTF and Bomb & Defuse aswell
http://www.urbanterror.info/groups/list/leagues/ here are also other Leagues listed.

It used to be pretty big at some point after the stand-alone release, but not quite comparable to ET at its best days. Though I think it has aged better than ET to be honest, and there is still a fair bit of competition going on and a couple of decent publics to play on at any time.

It has been quite limited by its Q3 mod heritage though, and HD is a big chance to break free from it and put it on Steam, etc. There is a huge amount of potential if some of the old community comes back, plus new players through Steam.
