Edit: I backed this project with £35 but I don't need my copy of "Battlerite" so I'd consider selling/trading it if anyone's interested.

ET refresh would be ∞x better anyway.
Lately there has been a resurgence of this type of game with Reflex etc but none of them has managed to take off and development has been slow. Not sure if you own Reflex but at most you'll find a few duel servers and 1 CTF running. Warsow has like 10-50 people playing on average, that's nothing. Quake Live is obviously at it's lowest point it has ever been. It's the same situation as with ET really.
Diabotical will have stuff like matchmaking, built-in tournament system, map & mod support as well cosmetics that Valve has proven how much that can help a game gain popularity. I mean look at the Kickstarter, the game already looks well polished.
Like I said before Quake Champions could potentially kill their momentum if it happens to do well. I'm not sure arena shooters can make a comeback but if it can there's probably only room for one.
You mention the movement of QL, well that's interesting because none of these new games utilizes VQ3 type movement. Quake Champions will have air control like CPMA, Warsow, QuakeWorld etc. So does Reflex. Toxikk uses dodging/dashing like Unreal Tournament. Which kind of surprises me because VQ3 type of movement has been proven to be the most successful and accessible type of movement.
So that worries me slightly about Quake Champions. Even though I like games with air control like cpma and reflex no game has ever been successful with this type of movement since quake world in the grand scheme of things. Unless you consider Warsow a success which I don't really. It was always a smaller, obscure title.
Diabotical will utilize air control too but seems to have some sort of movement system with double jumps and air dashing. The difference is that with diabotical's mod support they will give users the ability to even create their own movement system. They've already talked about this. So it will easily be possible to get an exact copy of VQ3 movement in the game if people want it. Honestly things like these are rare from developers these days. Devs rarely release stuff like SDK and allow users to modify things. They want complete control most of the time.
TL;DR
1. Quake 3/Live is one of the best games of all time, no one is denying that. But just like ET it's in rough shape these days. People want to see an arena shooter with a healthy player base and competitive scene again.
2. No other new arena shooter has managed to break through to become a major title.
3. Diabotical will have things like matchmaking, built in tournament system, mod/map tools, cosmetics like skins etc.
gief copy
Maybe I'll give it a try again soon but not planning on turning pro either way though!
