r_gamma and grey screen?

Hi!
I got a problem with my ET. When I turn up my gamma value the screen becomes more and more grey. The higher I set the gamma value the more it looks like someone has nuked the map with fog...
The grey starts to show at about 1.5.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
