Laptops are bad!

The left side of my laptop, just where my hand rests, gets quite hot while it's running! This isn't really a problem, except that now my left hand is starting to ache quite badly, and the spot where it rests is starting to turn dark on the laptop; my question is whether it's possible for a laptop to slowly cook your hand?
