ET running on a proxy server?

Does anyone have any experiences with ET running on a proxy server without changing the host's settings?

A friend of mine moved into a flat share and needs to connect over its proxy server.
We don't know nothing about proxy servers.

Any clue of what to do?
Any hint is welcome.
