The upcoming successor to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is now in the earlier announced open beta stage of testing. This is the part where regular people (some say about 50.000) get the chance to try, test and give feedback on the game, to get rid of the last load of bugs before release. The open beta will be hosted by Fileplanet.com and it is not clear if it will be subscribers only.
The open beta will probably not be identical and not have the same features as the ongoing closed beta. (That also features clans) There is no info at this time about whether or not this beta will make it possible for clans to scrim. Info from people being able to download the open beta earlier than planned (but not play), say it contains the map Sewer.
Official announcement
You can read the whole announcement and the following discussion on the official ET: QW community site here, see the system requirements for the open beta here and sometime 'soon-ish' download the beta from Fileplanet here.
Difference between betas, demos and muffins?
Closed beta = Release focused on testing, balancing, bug fixes, probably limited to a small number of community testers by invite only.
Open beta = Release focused on larger macro issues, like stats engine, server loading, etc. Could still be limited to a larger, but controlled community.
Demo = Available to everyone.
Muffins = Taste very yummy, but are sometimes too dry.

"The strogg are is coming"
you don't say we are the borgs we are going to assimilate you aswell! =)
ET will die a slow death just like RTCW did when ET was released so i wouldn't start bashing a game you've never played before!
:o(
Now, ET:QW is not similar to W:ET! And going from free to paid THAT'S F'N HARD!
Yes it is.
Anyone who's bored of ET should rather go to urbanterror.net. Going from free to free ain't that hard. ;)
"Oh noes do we have to pay for games!?!?! OMG!!!! ETQW SUCKZ"
:>
wolf: et would imo be worth 40$..
There are so many players wanting that game that it will be full a few hours after release.
The figts will imo be as focused as in games with small maps.
1#: Hardware usage
2#: to big maps
3#: vehicles
4#: master blaster lazer power plasma guns shit
5#: humans vs strogg / different weapons for different teams
6#: starship troopers / battlefield / halo remix
"no"
then wait for the demo/beta, try it and then make up your mind
It will use a lot of hardware support, the mapos are battlefieldish, there are vehicles, there are space-weapons, #5 is something I dont agree with and it is a remix of those games.
I thunk that sucks, but that's my opinion. And no, I never played the game but those things are facts.
nice article though

2#: I guess big maps scare you because big maps suck in other games, however with the objective based gameplay the maps will be feeling just as big as W:ET but with more objectives.
3#: will be disabled in all the cups organised by old ET players :P
4#: Just for strogg :P
5#: different weapons yes, but they all handle a lot alike each other..
6#: No, ET:QW will be the second game featuring class based gameplay were every class has an unique role like in W:ET, ET:QW will have objective based gameplay as in W:ET, imo ET:QW will feel a lot like a reskinned and renewed W:ET once you disable the vehicles (except for the MCP which can be compared to the tank / truck in W:ET, it only drives a designated path)..
