The strogg are coming! .."soon-ish"*

image: 76933The upcoming successor to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is now in the earlier announced open beta stage of testing. This is the part where regular people (some say about 50.000) get the chance to try, test and give feedback on the game, to get rid of the last load of bugs before release. The open beta will be hosted by Fileplanet.com and it is not clear if it will be subscribers only.

The open beta will probably not be identical and not have the same features as the ongoing closed beta. (That also features clans) There is no info at this time about whether or not this beta will make it possible for clans to scrim. Info from people being able to download the open beta earlier than planned (but not play), say it contains the map Sewer.

Official announcement
QuoteWhat I can confirm at this point is that the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta is definitely coming. I do not have a final date at the moment, but the groundwork is obviously being laid for the thing to roll out soon-ish.

We will have much more on the ETQW public beta in the near future, laying out our plans for the beta and how you can participate.

Stay tuned...

You can read the whole announcement and the following discussion on the official ET: QW community site here, see the system requirements for the open beta here and sometime 'soon-ish' download the beta from Fileplanet here.

Difference between betas, demos and muffins?
Closed beta = Release focused on testing, balancing, bug fixes, probably limited to a small number of community testers by invite only.
Open beta = Release focused on larger macro issues, like stats engine, server loading, etc. Could still be limited to a larger, but controlled community.
Demo = Available to everyone.
Muffins = Taste very yummy, but are sometimes too dry.

NOTE: the newspost might contain "some" grammar errors due to extreme hangover :(

Parent
my bacon sarnie wasnt as good as my greasy caf :(
Parent
mmmm... muffins...
"The stroggs are coming"

or

"The strogg are is coming"
Maybe strogg is the singular and plural form LoLoLo!
Parent
one penis, lots of penis.
Parent
fixed, thanks for the headsup.
Parent
No problem, was a nice post overall.
Parent
the strogg is coming makes no sense whatsoever in this context
Parent
Form and function, correct English doesn't always make sense.
Parent
QuoteThe Strogg are a fictional alien race who are the enemies in the first-person shooters Quake II and Quake 4, and a playable faction in the upcoming Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
Parent
strogg is plural :(

you don't say we are the borgs we are going to assimilate you aswell! =)
Parent
I know, although I would probably class it as a collective noun for the sake of it. I was just proving that proper English doesn't always make sense.
Parent
and that what actually makes sense, is not always proper english.
Parent
that's because it IS collective :p
Parent
qw sucks
paying for a beta :o nop :)
You'll all be playing it.

ET will die a slow death just like RTCW did when ET was released so i wouldn't start bashing a game you've never played before!
hah, i read that as 'bashing over'

:o(
Parent
Do you often "bash" to games then?
Parent
nono! not to games, do not worry sir
Parent
ET IS AN EVOLUTION OF RTCW! That's why RTCW died after ET was aluched. Besides going from paid to free is not that hard.

Now, ET:QW is not similar to W:ET! And going from free to paid THAT'S F'N HARD!
Parent
QuoteNow, ET:QW is not similar to W:ET!

Yes it is.
Parent
Totally correct. I wouldn't be surprised if ET would still be alive and kicking after ETQW starts dying itself. :)

Anyone who's bored of ET should rather go to urbanterror.net. Going from free to free ain't that hard. ;)
Parent
Heh dborg !! :)
Parent
"And going from free to paid THAT'S F'N HARD!"

"Oh noes do we have to pay for games!?!?! OMG!!!! ETQW SUCKZ"

:>

wolf: et would imo be worth 40$..
Parent
The money is not the issue, but that it's more difficult to build and maintain a large community. Even if you could still buy the game after three years, very few people would want to do that.
Parent
i want a muffin
I don't want a limited beta!
There are so many players wanting that game that it will be full a few hours after release.
large map = no competion
Well I guess only a couple %'s is going to be used on big maps, whats the point in wandering about 1000m from a objective? Gameplay is: objective->objective->objective: not spreadout->walk for 15 min->shoot one guy.

The figts will imo be as focused as in games with small maps.
Parent
ok i start again my flame about this game:

1#: Hardware usage
2#: to big maps
3#: vehicles
4#: master blaster lazer power plasma guns shit
5#: humans vs strogg / different weapons for different teams
6#: starship troopers / battlefield / halo remix
Parent
#1-6 have you played the game?
"no"
then wait for the demo/beta, try it and then make up your mind
Parent
i agree with zafoga
Parent
he hasnt played it yet, but his points are true though.

It will use a lot of hardware support, the mapos are battlefieldish, there are vehicles, there are space-weapons, #5 is something I dont agree with and it is a remix of those games.

I thunk that sucks, but that's my opinion. And no, I never played the game but those things are facts.

nice article though

thats for the beta, and beta's usually require better hardware because of bugs etc afaik
Parent
I have 2200+, like the final version will have that.
Parent
1#: welcome to 2007 mate.
2#: I guess big maps scare you because big maps suck in other games, however with the objective based gameplay the maps will be feeling just as big as W:ET but with more objectives.
3#: will be disabled in all the cups organised by old ET players :P
4#: Just for strogg :P
5#: different weapons yes, but they all handle a lot alike each other..
6#: No, ET:QW will be the second game featuring class based gameplay were every class has an unique role like in W:ET, ET:QW will have objective based gameplay as in W:ET, imo ET:QW will feel a lot like a reskinned and renewed W:ET once you disable the vehicles (except for the MCP which can be compared to the tank / truck in W:ET, it only drives a designated path)..
Parent
totally agree.
Parent
Read something about QW then whine
Parent
its possible to dl the shit already, if u r pro :D
and I mean legally, from a real ftp, no torrent/illegal shits :)
Parent
QW sucks
Quote by enemyterritory.comAt long last, we are delighted to confirm the impending Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta. The ETQW Closed Beta has been going extremely well and yielding excellent results. We want to give more people the opportunity to give us feedback on the game so we’re going to open a Public Beta with 60,000 slots available. This way we’ll be able to test many more combinations of hardware, RAM, CPU, graphics card, drivers etc. than we’ve been able to ourselves, and also get a better idea of how the game plays for the general gaming public.

The Public Beta build will consist of a single map named “Sewer”, which is part of ETQW’s Pacific Campaign. Set in Japan, the map revolves around a Strogg base hidden in, well, a sewer. It’s an interesting mix of outdoor and indoor, vehicle and infantry combat, deployables and counter-deployables and good old-fashioned FPS combat.

If you’d like to help us finish ETQW, we’d really appreciate your participation. If you want to just play a game for free you may find it a frustrating experience. This Public Beta is not the Demo - it’s not the finished game, but an opportunity to get feedback from a large group of people while testing stability and performance on a wider range of hardware combinations. The Public Beta will also collect some information on your hardware configuration, so you shouldn’t apply unless you’re comfortable with that.

When the Public Beta opens, participants will be sent their unique license code that is required for play. As we don’t have the infrastructure necessary to download tens of thousands of clients, we’ve asked FilePlanet to help us distribute these license codes along with the beta clients.

A fixed number of beta slots are being set aside for Fileplanet subscribers, so if you already have a FilePlanet subscription, you’re in the front of the queue. The rest of the slots will then go to those with free FilePlanet accounts. To be clear: You don’t have to pay anyone anything to participate in the ETQW Public Beta. It’s up to you if you want to pay FilePlanet for use of the improved download services they provide.

We will reveal more details on the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta, including the official start date, in the near future. Hope to see you all online very soon!
