Enemy Territory @ Qcon '06

Giving Enemy Territory another run…

I did not have the pleasure of going to Quakecon ’05 because I had some real life issues arise however I rooted from my home PC, and with the wonderful ETTV coverage I never missed a match. It was an exciting tournament aside from the issues regarding the amount of teams that actually showed up. Although the last ET tournament had its issues, it was still incredibly fun and it brought a huge increase of activity and participation in the North American Enemy Territory scene, bringing back many RTCW teams and old school ET players, which in my opinion was the greatest thing to happen to both the North American, European, and even Australian ET Scenes. There were teams from US, Canada, Estonia, and Australia including so many more in the qualifiers.

All in all, I think if the setup is revamped a little bit to give teams time to get either sponsored or the money together, making sure teams that qualify actually are planning to attend, it will be more successful. Last season multiple NA teams got knocked out by EU teams in the qualifiers, which some had no plans on attending at all, and in conclusion resulted in not all 16 tournament spots being filled with the best possible qualifying teams. For example, North American team Commie Bastards played European team Zero Barrier, and after the Commies had been beaten they had been knocked out and had lost all interest in the game, and therefore the team fell apart. Zero Barrier wouldn’t have been able to find the sponsors in time. Given the right amount of time, teams like eSrael, parodia, saevus, and iNfensus may have been able to participate.

In conclusion, if Enemy Territory is at Quakecon ’06 a huge amount of both teams and players would come back from “retirement” because there is money involved. This would most likely be Enemy Territory’s last chance at being at a LAN event and because by next Quakecon RTCW2 will most likely be out. Having Enemy Territory as a tournament game would really put the game at its peak once more, as this seems to be ET’s last year.
