i wanted to study hebrew, but because i have access to a native Japanese teacher and free support from college I'm doing this instead

it has certain advantages over roman/western languages but in other aspects it is a much bigger pain in the ass

learning the kanji is probably the most time-consuming part of the language (2000ish in everyday use) but you can't read/write for shit without it

I know enough german to vacation there, and can read enough dutch to understand most dutch conversations that happen on crossfire and I play in a Japanese ET clan and understand nothing

After 4 years I had learned like 1000 symbols. 2 years after I finished school I can't even remember 25 or so :P

See, I actually thought the same. However, everyone including native speakers say that writing is the hardest... It's hard to say, I guess they're both difficult in their own ways... Both require intense memorization, but writing requires more, while speaking requires training your voice.
