Brink in September

image: newbriewe

Brink has grabbed the spotlight in September, with plenty of news, interviews, previews and content floating around. The multiplayer component of Brink is building up quite nicely, and is based on the similar team experience found in the Wolfenstein series. There are plenty of video interviews and Q&As going into a lot of detail on the multiplayer, even though Brink won't see the shelves for a further six months. As expected from Splash Damage, Brink won't be a regular FPS. The game will feature up-to 8 player Co-op throughout Campaign mode, as well as a few other surprises. Richard Ham described some of the advanced modifications Splash Damage have made to the id Tech 4 engine - to quote (not exact), Splash Damage have pretty much made it their own engine, with plenty of stuff re-written from scratch. A new feature added to the engine will only add textures to the memory that you can see, allowing high detailed textures - hence superior graphics. More information on this can be seen in the video interview.

Compare this with the MP info we got for Wolfenstein ...

Only issue I have with Brink is it'll also have deployables, and tbh it was the deployables I hated most in ET:QW, even more than vehicles.

Other than that, it looks really promising.
Deployables work great in TF2. (Sentries, dispensers and teleporters)
Parent
yeah they pissed me off aswel, but after they got limited and people used there heads they became uselss pretty much in ETQW i still think they should take this sort of non skill bs out tho :S
Parent
Why? To make it more like ET or why? If done well, I see no problem having them. It's more or less balancing issue.

Disabling them by mods is something that might be possible.
Parent
ET? whats that ? no i just dont like the idea of having automated turrets (technicaly with aim bots) killing people for you. fair play if you have to mount them and shoot em yourself now that would be cool.
Parent
You haven't played TF2 then.
Parent
IT'S A PICTURE

HURRAY!
Brink will kick ass x)
so try to write something better except bitching?!
Another failure incomming.
they made the engine even worse?
is that even possible?
Parent
SplashDamage
impossible is nothing
Parent
will be nearly impossible even for them..
Parent
we're trying our best :-)
Parent
so your trying your best to make Brink worse then Wolfenstein? nice then i might download it for Co-op modus but definetly not buy it. Wolf was the worst 37 euro i invested _ever_.
could've better invested a bit more and drank a bottle of scotch in one go.

i bet getting your intestents cleared in a hospital is more fun then that MP.

and yes im serious.

edit: i know my question does not rephrase your comment. but im serious about the Wolf part.
Parent
this one looks at least interesting and original, unlike wolfenstein.
deployables and ironsight in a tf2 style

do not want.
i've talked about iron sights at length in the uber brink thread.

what's the concerns about deployables for people?
Parent
ETQW deployables are horrible overpowered , too fast constructed and just boring ... if iam going to play a multiplayer game i want to mess with real human players and no bot-controlled-auto-aim things.

Once burnt, twice shy.
Parent
right, i'm not crazy about the deployables in ETQW either, but are you saying the deployables in TF2 are equally bad for the same reasons?
Parent
i never played tf2 because of the cartoonish style , so i just thought about etqw deployables.
Parent
Radho, I'd agree with hAn, ET:QW deployables were too powerful, and of course getting a machine to do your shooting for you rather than having to shoot someone yourself kinda undermines the whole purpose of the game, it is a First Person Shooter after all.

Personally I'd ensure the deployables are not that powerful, say a Sentry gun that can be taken out by a single player, as long as they're fast / accurate enough etc. and for competition a cvar to disable them completely should the competitive community so desire (which I suspect they would).
Parent
so then just to be clear, the main concern about deployables is when they're so powerful, it's taking the game away from what it should be focused on: fighting other players. that's fair enough feedback :-)
Parent
you got that right:P

but imo maybe just include enough spread for the sentrygun to result in 33% acc same damage the mp does and somewhat slightly increased rate of fire but give it less 'health' than a player has, maybe 75% of that.

(But still I can't say it more often: make ammo/health cabinets - you put in one pack and it wouldn't fade untill the cabinet is destroyed(maybe even make 2-3 packs get dropped by that - based on how many packs were in it at that time - and maybe have let them have 2 packs for 1 pack being inserted(by players) or 3 packs for 2 - and issue the xp to them when the packs are taken) - really would appreciate that:)

And if there is something compareable to a rocket deployable - let it have a low rate of fire - not targeting (actually shoot grounds with a small splash area) but with more health than the sentry would have.

(And maybe have a targeting delay of 1 second for the sentry and if there is explosive deployable)

Wouldn't actually like buffing deployable's what so ever - since people would just have 3-4 of them on their team as defensive team and would become imbalanced (even if you intend to perfectly balance:P)
Parent
mb make deployables human-long-range-controlled only, with no aim-bots. a players decides whether to use a turret or to shoot with his own hands. if he uses a turret - his body is unprotected, very much like flyer-drones in ETQW.... but not flying and not blowing (lolz) up!
Parent
Deployables and landmines are similar. They have to be balanced, that means that one player should be able to annihilate them with one clip or one hand grenade or whatever. Fair game!
Parent
Crossfire are interviewing Paul Wedgewood soon too!
*Wedgwood :P
Parent
hope the engine is really different from etqw/wolf, though I have no clue how they can change a whole engine so fast...
ET:QW was released almost 2 years ago, plenty of time to make changes.
Parent
screens looks like a comics book
i had the same feeling
Parent
to work under zenimax is a bit different than work under activision

i hope that this will be a new start for quality multigaming :)

(for sd and id too)
still waiting for real gameplay
First I was like "Yeah right, September next year perhaps", then I realized I failed.
I also failed, so don't feel so bad :)
Parent
awesome, this game will be great no dout.
n1 beggin
game for gay
looks good :)

hope we here more from the sd boys and rahdo soon on cf soon :)
niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

mw2 > wolfenstein < brink
QuoteThe game will feature up-to 8 player Co-op throughout Campaign mode

Now this is something :)
the future background never did a great success, i mean, in multiplayer games.

and plus this graphic doesnt say me nothin', nothin' special. Until i dont see the game in my hand i think sd and their games after et:qw need to be taken with no so special entusiam.
will fail: 1) dude starts the interview by telling how great the gfx are. 2) after that he talks about the great stuff they implemented for the consoles. 3) trying to emulate cod4? 4) way to much stuff is being implemented.
The best thread to read for impressions is the Q&A thread on the splashdamage forums: http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18079

Most of the questions are asked and answered that came up after seeing the screenshots / presentation.
