SK win Intel Extreme Masters, Chengdu

image: IEM_09_logo_bigTwo weeks before the Event, Sweden SK decided to change 2 players. Nobody expected them to win, but they have proven the world wrong.

Today, 07:30 CET, SK|1.6 played fnatic in the Grand Final of the Intel Extreme Masters Global Challenge, China Chengdu. A match of amazingly high tense and great frags ended 2-0 in favor of SK.Gaming. Eventhough the score is 2-0, it was exciting till the end, it was one of the closest Grand Finals in history. After winning de_nuke 21-18 in Overtime, what shows how close the match was, SK could pull things up on de_train. This map also went into overtime, but SK managed to win it 21-16. Until the last moment it could have gone either way and this final will be remembered as one of the best ever. fnatic's star player Sweden f0rest tried to pull things up for fnatic as good as possible, but SK has just been too strong this week. On SK's side we have to mention Sweden walle who played amazingly this week. All in all, SK is going home with 15,000 $ and the Intel Extreme Masters Season 4 title.

Final Standings

Sweden SK Gaming ($15,000)
Sweden fnatic.MSI ($7,500)
Korea, Republic of WeMadeFox ($5,000)
4th: China TyLoo ($2,500)
5-8: Germany mouz($1,500)
5-8: United States of America Evil Geniuses($1,500)
5-8: Indonesia fTitaNs($1,500)
5-8: China wNv.cn($1,500)

which game was?
wow, really nice prices for cs :)
Parent
Isn't actually that much for CS lol, CS has always been a bit of a money grabber.
Parent
the final was great even tough fnatic lost. sk played well with the new guys, face and khrystal
Motivation is one, if not the biggest factor to success in any game. I guess SK finally got it back with adding face and kHRYSTAL.

Fnatic did the same a few months ago when they added Gux and gtr to their roster. They were even considered unbeatable at that time.

I still prefer fnatic for being some totally crazy guys :-D

Soo true 8)

+ a lol for f0rest :'D
Parent
but compared to gux or get right, khrystal isn't that good at aiming so i think fnatic is still a little bit better. time will tell
Parent
Well if they thought that they needed more firepower I'm sure they would have taken FYRR73 instead of kHRYSTAL. Maybe they needed someone who is motivated, follows the tactics and got a good timing. Aiming isn't everything, not in ET, not in CS or any other game.
Parent
What about Moorhuhn?
Parent
Even there you gotta watch the time and shoot the right things at the right time to get max points! :-(
Parent
true but the awp of FYRR7E is amazing. <3
but it's a pity that face and khrystal left h2k!
Parent
If you take a look at mTw even tho they have mje & zonic they are always focusing on teamplay instead of outaiming the opponents.
Parent
i never said that aiming is the most important thing! especially in cs tacs are important. mTw is a team who cares a lot about their tacs and 2008 was an amazing year for them. but just take a look at the current fnatic. even carn said that their tacs are aim based and look which success they had this year.
Parent
do this guys live on playing cs? (I mean no school, job, like grumpy in warcraft?)
Parent
Ye, most of them do and I think atleast the top teams do quite well. Though I think it's not comparable with the earnings of top Starcraft players or a few WCIII players (Moon for example).

And I think with grumpy you mean Grubby :-P?
Parent
Yeah the awesome dutch guy :)
Parent
Heard they make around 700-800 euros a month.

South Corean Starcraft players can come on an income of over 100.000 euros a year. Even if they dont belong to the top5.
Parent
nice money :o
Nice post essakz, but why so much money for an old game? :o Can't ET get this kind of support?
cs 1.6 is still the most succesful and most beloved game in the world, ET will never get this awards :D
Parent
sad but true :(
Parent
giev url to vods
They go home with the title of Global Challenge Chengdu not of the Intel Extreme Masters season 4 but the have qualified for the global finals.
Thanks for clarifying. I was wondering why the Global Finals were so unbalanced in terms of teams per continent :P
Parent
Shame fnatic didnt win :(
was a nice tourney, couldn't be arsed to watch the finals though ]x
Does anyone have a link to the VOD?
it will be on esl-tv's vod section soon

main highlight of the match robbans ace
Parent
stop fanboying cs!
Parent
stop planting LANDMINES >: )
Parent

lol....kenji...

What happened to the glory days when the top teams were US?
sorry to break it to you but there has never really been a time like that, swedish and scandinavian teams in general have pretty much dominated in CS since the early years :p

team 3D did manage to pull a few upsets here and there, but you could just take a look at the CPL winners throughout the years

CPL World Championship Events:

# 2006 - Sweden fnatic - (Counter-Strike)
# 2005 - Sweden SK Gaming - (Counter-Strike)
# 2004 - Norway NoA - (Counter-Strike)
# 2003 - Sweden SK Gaming - (Counter-Strike)
# 2002 - Sweden SK Gaming - (Counter-Strike)
# 2001 - Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas - (Counter-Strike)
# 2000 - Sweden e9 - (Counter-Strike)
Parent
lol, what about them?
Parent
they were ranked 1st in the world for a little while, and they would have been for a while if CS:S didn't fuck everything up.
Parent
wasnt there a summer and winter event?
Parent
ye, there was, including events all over europe :p

*installing cs*
This news made me think... look how popular CS is, and for how long it has been "mainstream", yet it still gets these low 5 figure prize purses, with the odd exception. Granted, I know shit all about the CS scene.
ESL had to reduce the prize money for the Intel Extreme masters fom $750,000 to $500,000 due to the economy, in the previous season the first prize at the global challenges was $25,000
Parent
I'm wondering, when was the last time a German team was actually doing well?
Mousesports placed top3 in quite a few events the last months/year.
Parent
mousesports reached first place at the Intel Extreme Masters Supercup by beating fnatic and mtw. it was in the end of august i guess.

After changing 2 players only weeks before the event nobody expected SK to finish anywhere near first, let alone win it.
