Modern Warfare 2 Sells 4.7m Copies In ONE Day!!

Activision Blizzard had one mission in mind when launching "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2:" To make the videogame the largest entertainment launch in history.

After only one day of sales, the heavily hyped military actioner seems to be closing in on its target, with an estimated 4.7 million units sold in the U.S. and the U.K. alone, generating $310 million for the gamemaker.

Comparably, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," the top pic of the year at the box office and on DVD, opened with $220 million in its first weekend, and sold 7.5 million DVD and Blu-rays, in its first week. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" still has the top opening weekend of any pic to date with a $394 million worldwide haul.

The strong performance for "Modern Warfare 2," released Tuesday, should provide the videogame industry with a much needed boost as it heads into the holiday season, given that the overall biz is down for the year. October sales figures will be announced later today.

The games biz likes to set benchmarks to beat, and Activision's very vocal topper Bobby Kotick had spent months touting the potential for "Modern Warefare 2" to topple previous records not just for a game, but "any media."

Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto IV" had broken previous industry records when it bowed in 2008, selling 3.7 million units on its first day, and generating more than $500 million in revenue by the end of its first week, from 6 million units sold worldwide.

Before that, Microsoft's "Halo 3" had set the number to beat in 2007 with 3.3 million units in 24 hours and $300 million in its first week.

While many of Activision's sales were generated in the U.S., with millions of pre-sales contributing to that figure, "Modern Warfare 2" also sold briskly overseas.

In the U.K., for example, the game moved more than 1.2 million units in its first day, twice the 631,000 units that "Grand Theft Auto IV" sold.

The previous installment of "Call of Duty" sold 13 million units in 2007.

Analysts had predicted "Modern Warfare 2" to sell nearly 12 million units during all of October through December.

Wel... In the Netherlands (dunno if its on onther places to) you have to show your ID or pasport to get the game, if you are younger then 18 you can't get it in shops :P
not really...
Parent

Parent

Can't have you winning the news content prize ffs! :P

Haha I think we'll both lose it to eiM ;)

SP was nice idd!
Bought it on my xbox, great fun for multiplayer there, but would never consider it on pc.
I also thought I'd never get it on PC after I heard the bullshit about dedi servers etc. But tbh, it's alot better than you think it would be.
Parent
I can imagine its a fairly decent public game tbh. Its just following the same format as the consoles, and id rather have it on that so i can play it with mates. Im sure there is nothing terribly wrong with it as a pc game, just might as well play cod4 with promod and proper servers.
Parent
There's no lean, which makes sense for consoles cause they don't have enough buttons, but it surely fucks you up on PC!
Parent
Ye i read the 'what this game doesnt have that makes it shit' article. Which is pretty much another reason to get it on console. The fact that not as many people bought it on PC yet it still sold this much testifys to the fact it doesnt really matter, they are making more money than they probably would of spending the extra manhours on re-creating the pc version.
Parent
IWNET will make sure PC users pay up for the DLC's, and maybe even have to pay to play. So yeah, that revenue makes up for the loss of sales in the competitive scene.
Parent
I'd be surprised if PC users where willing to pay for COD6 online tbh. But who knows.
Parent
For DLC's? Sure they will, most of the sales for PC went to casual players, and these players want the new content cause it's fun!
Parent
such noncompetive shit breaks new records.
its sad.
Most gamers are casual gamers. I don't see why people are surprised.
Parent
Have you played it yet?

Stary & I played a 2v2 last night, and tbh, it's not THAT bad.
Parent
put your scrimguide on here :p
Parent
sry mate ill wait a bit more with this game. but if the first patch maybe will be good or next onlinel geauges will ccome up ill buy it :)
Parent
Man, you can't say it's noncompetitive without trying it lol!

The game is really good and not as bad as you might think!
Parent
as if previous record-breakers were competitive.... what's your point?
Parent
The game is good, but the matchmaking system is very, very poor....
