Infinity Ward has started developing a massively multiplayer online game, possibly for the Call of Duty series.
Activision who partnered up with Blizzard two years ago are looking to replicate some of Blizzard's subscription profits with its other big series.
Destructoid reported that Infinity Ward will continue developing annual instalments of the Call of Duty franchise, while working on their first MMO title alongside of them. It's uncertain whether the MMO will be in the Call of Duty universe, but since Infinity Ward hasn't made any other game than the Call of Duties, one could assume this is the case.
The Modern Warfare developer is said to be calling in the help of ex-World of WarCraft and EverQuest II devs - including the latter's lead designer - to help get is first MMO game off the ground.
It became very clear with the release of Modern Warfare 2 that Infinity Ward does not support competitive gaming, and therefore the scene has lost faith in the developer. But could an MMO be of any use to the competitive community?

If you have false illusions that game developers actually develop games for gamers then you mistaken.
Its all about the Wonga$$ and if you can enjoy the game thats all good!
If there is one thing that is evident from IW though, is that they do have the ability to make fun games. If the game is fun I have no doubt that people will try it out, but I seriously doubt that it will be able to hold people's interest in the same way as WoW where they will pay a monthly fee just to be able to keep playing. They might sell units but they won't be able to keep customers.
If people want to play an MMO then they will play WoW. If people want an online FPS then they will play something free. Unless IW manages to somehow revolutionize the genre of online FPS gaming then I don't see success here. Especially considering that this is almost guaranteed to be targeted toward consoles, it will be a miracle if they can pull a successful game like this off.
