rapha wins ESWC 2010 Quake Live

image: 18_bigAfter a year of absence the ESWC is back and the best of eSports are gathered for the Grand Finals at the New Port Bay hotel in France Disneyland Paris. Over the next four days these contenders are fighting to get their share of a whopping $213,500 of total prize money, divided for 10 tournaments, one of them being Quake Live.

Final standings

United States of America rapha - $8,000
Poland av3k - $4,000
Russia Cooller - $2,000
4th United States of America DaHanG

Sunday 16:30 CEST: United States of America rapha vs Poland av3k - 2:0

Bronze final

16:20 CEST: DaHanG vs Cooller - 0:2

Semifinals:

15:00 CEST: Semi-final 1 - rapha vs dahang - 2:0
15:40 CEST: Semi-final 2 - cooller vs av3k - 0:2

Group Stage 2 - Group A (casting by 2GD and proZaC)
10:30 CEST: R1 - av3k vs strenx - 2:1 // rapha vs stermy - 1:2
11:15 CEST: R2 - rapha vs strenx - 2:0 // stermy vs av3k - 0:2
12:00 CEST: R3 - rapha vs av3k - 2:1 // strenx vs stermy - 1:2

Group Stage 2 - Group B (casting by Slasher and djWHEAT)
10:30 CEST: R1 - cypher vs noctis - 2:1 // dahang vs cooller - 1:2
11:15 CEST: R2 - cypher vs dahang - 0:2 // cooller vs noctis - 2:0
12:00 CEST: R3 - cypher vs cooller - 2:1 // noctis vs dahang - 0:2

The second groupstage started with a big surprise as stermy beat the current world champion rapha. The American then stepped up his game and beat strenx straight in two maps and av3k in a three-mapper. However, the fate of rapha was in the hands of stermy and strenx, since stermy's 2:0 victory would leave rapha out of the playoffs. That didn't happen though, strenx managed to take a map from stermy and despite his strong performance the Italian couldn't advance in to top 4. In group B things were equally interesting when DaHanG beat Cypher 2:0. Both Cooller and Cypher beat noctis 2:1, meaning Cypher would have to beat Cooller 2:0 in order to advance. This didn't happen either, Cooller showed an amazing performance in ztn and won the map, meaning Cypher is not in the top 4.

In the first groupstage everything went according to pre-tournament speculations and no big surprises were to be seen. After some technical difficulties the match between noctis and k1llsen was replayed and just like in ESL Intel Extreme Masters European Championships, the German couldn't advance to the next round. The first day was crowned with an amazing game between Cooller and strenx, with a triple overtime in the second map. The second day was a bit of a chaos as the staff decided to run the both groups at the same time. Because of that many games couldn't be covered, however, to be honest, not a lot was missed as Cypher and av3k rolled their opponents in a convincing way.

Parent
Winner of Finnish qualifiers? Where???!?!?
Parent
there were no finnish qualifiers D:
Parent
I know, it was sarcasm:PP I barely know any other finnish quake players than dimmoo. How is situation of Finland Quake scene? Do they have any potential players to participate these kind of tournaments?
Parent
Damiah is still probably the best dueller in Finland and could possibly challenge some of the players in ESWC but he hasn't played in any cups and I don't think he's even playing duel at the moment :S Then there are noble and epiotic but I don't know a lot about them. So yeah, the duel scene is rather crap, most players in #quakelive.fi seem to focus in TDM and CTF and now that is summer even those are dead :E
Parent
Too bad. It would be nice if they could organize some QL tourny in Assembly where Finlands finest could compete. Also some online tourney would be awesome. I really would like to see some Finns in action on these international tournaments!
Parent
I think it's not ESWC's job to organize the qualifiers, someone from the country has to ask ESWC for permission to hold the qualifiers and anyone who follows the scene knows there aren't that many Finnish duellers so they can't be bothered :S And I think someone was trying to organize QL compo at the Assembly but very few were interested in it at #quakelive.fi so there won't be any :v

easy for av3k but ok... =)
awesome, holidays + QL stream.
Just curious, do they get selected or do they always have to play a qualifier?
I follow most quakelive streams, but generally on lan it's always the same few players :P
Some are invited based on the results in previous ESWC tournaments (Cypher 2008 champion, rapha won Masters of Athens etc) and some are invited because there were no qualifiers in their country (Sl1p, DaHanG etc). The rest have to go through qualifiers
Parent
hahaha, k1llsen :DDD

Can you descibre how your schedule looked like during the bootcamp?

Cooller: I played between 40 and 50 games a day, around nine hours playtime. I mostly woke up around 12, had breakfast and went to the office to play, play, play. Later in the evening we had dinner again and after that I played a few last games.
