This Week in Gaming - July 16th

Each week I plan to cover the past week's latest news surrounding the world of gaming, including major tournament results, headline gaming news & headlines and notable games releases and updates. It's been over 6 months since I've written this and Crossfire is a very different place right now.

Gaming News
The most exciting piece of gaming news this past week was the beginning of the highly anticipated Steam Summer Sale which I wrote about a few days ago, here. For the past few years the online game distributor, Steam, has run a Summer Sale offering many of most popular gaming titles at greatly reduced prices. Selling everything from your Triple AAA Modern Warfares to your indie gems, the sale has each genre and niche covered, and is sure to tempt you over the 10 day sale period.

Speaking of Steam, Valve announced the release Steam Greenlight. In Valve's own words:

QuoteSteam Greenlight is a new system that enlists the community's help in picking some of the next games to be released on Steam. Developers post information, screenshots, and videos for their game and seek a critical mass of community support in order to get selected for distribution. Steam Greenlight also helps developers get feedback from potential customers and start creating an active community around their game as early in the development process as they like.

In layman's terms, it appears that Valve has taken the criticism of their indie game selection process and is instead crowdsourcing the whole thing. This is potentially massive for indie game developers, especially for niche genres.

eSports
With the $1 million Dota 2 Invitational looming at the end of August, one of the final LAN events pre-Invitational took place over the weekend just gone. After a long weekend featuring all of the best Dota 2 teams, Ukraine Na'Vi faced against Europe Mousesports for the gold in the grand finals. The Ukranian's put on a dominant display in-front of a live streaming audience of over 25,000 viewers to win 2-0 and arguably retake their position as the best Dota 2 team in the world.

In the world of Starcraft 2, the finals of the third season of the NASL finished yesterday. After working through a lengthy season schedule, the participants were whittled down from 50+ to a 8. The 8 finalists headed to Canada for a casted LAN event. Amongst the participants were 5 Korean players and 3 Western players, including hometown hero HuK, who unfortunately fell at the first hurdle. When the dust has settled, French Zerg France Stephano stood tall after sweeping Korea, Republic of Alicia in the grand final infront of a viewing audience of over 60,000.

Notable Releases
Unless you're a fan of NCAA Football 13, you won't find much interesting coming out this week. It's typical that the summer months are rather empty for gamers looking to expand their collection, but thankfully we have the Steam Summer Sale! At the time of posting it is currently day 4 of 10, and the games on sale right now are:

  • Cities XL
  • The Darkness II
  • Hitman: Blood Money
  • Serious Sam 3 BFE
  • Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword
  • Trine 2
  • The Walking Dead
  • Saints Row The Third
  • Indie Bundle VI
