Parent
He's calling you fat.
Parent
plox, im trying to get over 70 kilos :'(
Parent
i still wonder why guys like urtier still look like .... (A)
Parent
actually, it's not a good point... there are so many competitions you don't have to DO anything, that I can say you are wrong if you think that's why gaming is not a sport
Parent
E-sport imo. Not the same as normal sports but similar!
Wrote a short column about this on the Overload website. If you would apply the sports theory and demands on what it takes to be called a sport, it is.

Quote by RewolfEveryone 'knows' what a sport is, but unfortuntaly there is no defined meaning of Sport. Sports usually apply to a certain ruleset in order to be called a Sport. These are as follows:

- There is a global Ruleset in every Sport, which is known by all players. These rules can vary over time and tournaments can have their own additional rules, but there is a global ruleset of accepted general rules

- A Sport as a competition aspect. This can either by by a direct confrontation against opponents or by setting a certain score.

- A Sport is being played for the pleasure of the players or viewing pleasure of the spectators.

- A Sport consists of of a fysical and/or mental activity, practiced individualy or with a team, with or without opponents to win from , or to reach a certain goal, or for health issues.

- The primair goal of the competition is to win from opposing teams by the rules, not by artistic, esthetic or financed reasons.

If we take these rules in account we can pretty much state that eSports are an official sport. It applies to all the points made here, maybe with an exception of the first one, but most of the global rulesets for ET/COD etc have many stuff in common.
English language is an arse at times, ph > f
Parent
Well, this is more a translation of what I learned at my Sports Sociology study which was in Dutch yes.
Parent
its physical, not fysical.
Parent
Course they share many similarities, the competitive nature, social aspect, individual skill, teamwork [game dependent], natural ability, reflexes etc, but I’ll never consider gaming a sport.

Though as said on esr, the term sport can have such a broad definition… I see no reason to pigeon hole, and can’t imagine why people want gaming to be considered a sport, be happy in yer own niche…
better than last poll
omfg ofcourse not...

you must be very addicted if you see gaming as a sport, sick minds :|

Chess/darts is as physical as gaming is and they're considered sports. I'd say gaming is a sport too.
Chess is good though image: thumbs_up
Parent
cyber-sport maybe competitive wise yes (especially Q4 and other 1v1 games)
should be quit eassier if it was a sport, good excuus to play more:D
competition = sport regardless of the physical aspects.

edit: competitive eating is considered a sport so wtf not
hows contacting quakecon for et going? :<
Parent
considering all the other silly activities being treated as sports: yes
If taking into account the meaning of sport then there is no arguement that it is. However, whether it can be accepted my the masses that it is a sport, I doubt that will happen as the connotation of the word sport brings people to think of the physical aspect of sport.
that will change though. The gaming generation is just starting to enter the age of being contributing members of society where they decide what is standard & they will make it common place & acceptable. It's already started
Parent
Exactly, for example ESPN has this show about guys playing Madden on xbox for prizes and they drove around the country on a tourbus and then had the final near times square on a giant screen on the side of a buliding :X

If the biggest sport tv station shows that kinda weird stuff then I would say gaming is accepted quite well. (i prefer watching ettv over that stuff though xD)
Parent
It'll have been on ESPN 7 or smth silly like that, show all kinda random crap, even womens football from time to time ^^
Parent
The madden thing hes talking about is on reg espn but you have to consider the game is related to an actual sport.
Parent
If people even consider chess as a sport then gaming is one too.
Indeed but I think chess isnt a sport either lol
Parent
my vote was based on that aswell :P
Parent
who cares what people consider sport, what's the reasons, its what YOU think
i think not
alot of people under estimate the level of high gaming....

so ye... 1st vote :)
If it's competitive then yes
I think its similar, but no sport

you have to be highly concentrated, you have to build up your skills by practising, you even sweat sometimes...and so on
Not to compare with normal sport, but some points are almost the same
Not in any way or form. It is a game.
its not real sports its something like chess

It's sport if you can tell to a girl. But I doubt you would be proud to tell something like this! So its not a sport hehe
so you have never played chess sir.
Parent
Yes I played on competitive level lol :)) Even have some medals..
Parent
QuoteIt's sport if you can tell to a girl. But I doubt you would be proud to tell something like this! So its not a sport hehe

agree:D
Parent
i said it once to get rid of a chick.. but she thought it was cool what i did :(
Parent
"I LOVE YOU"

"BUT I'M A GAMER. I'M A NERD. NOW GTFO"
Parent
thats where it went wrong :(
Parent
You don't think Korea, Republic of Spirit Moon gets chicks, from being who he is? :)

Of course Asia is different than Europe and America.
Parent
Ok i translate you.
It's sport in asia not in eu, thx !
Parent
I think its similar, but no sport
lolled gaming a sport:P fuck off never:D:D it's maybe like a hobby same as football but I could never call it a sport
Depends on the definition. It's a sport in the same way that darts or snooker are sports. No physical exertion, but a lot of skill involved.
There are many points to say it is a sport, but there is one point that will never make it a sport - sitting in front of a PC and pressing a few buttons really isn't sport material, hence it's always referred to as eSports and always should be, and always will be.
What about racing then?
You sit in a car, turn the steeringwheel and push down on pedals with your feet.
Its not very physical, but no I've never heard anyone say thats no sport.
Parent
It's referred to as MotorSport in England. Similar to the same meaning behind eSports. That was a good point, but as I said it's real name is MotorSport, but often gets called a sport.
Parent
i love how more people on crossfire view gaming as a sport than on esreality, ET players are so geeky <:-D
The eSreality crowd are just more cynical.
Parent
My first thought was: hell no!
Sports are like football, tennis and so on ..
But then I realised that "games" such as chess are also considered as a sport, and following this gaming can be considered as a sport
ofc lol! check my muscles!
A sport requires physical activities
like chess, for example?
Parent
Chess ain't a sport either
Parent
The tradition of organized competitive chess started in the 16th century and has developed extensively. Chess today is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee.
Parent
Recognized as a sport only by a small group of old and bald men
Parent
maybe, but they have 100% professional league, cups etc.
Parent
Sport was created to have fun in the first place, after that the competitve levels came with the leagues and stuff.

doesn't have to be physical at all (:
as long as you enjoy the thing you do and you don't think about your 'real-life' issues + you gather social contacts/friends whatsoever it's considered as a sport imo.

The thing is, almost only physical sports have been accepted by our sociaty as real sports. few exceptions as chess and stuff.

already for 5 or 10 years more and more people started with playing games(Gameboy/pc/xbox,PS) and i think in the near future it surely will become accepted as a real sport.

ofcourse there will be people against it, but you have that with every sport.
(example: pff, soccer, it's just kicking against a bal and chasing it again, and they earn money with it!)

If you call a person who is behind a pc whole day a 'nolifer' because you think he has no social contacts (while he does) i just think you are narrowminded/thinking inside a box.

but hey, that's just my opinion.
they call football a sport, why shouldn't gaming be a sport as well?
Yes and it should be accepted as one!:
35%
(128 votes)

who are that 128 nerds?
It is. It's a mind game, just like chess.
just think of old men discussing about ET tactics instead of football xD

or drago's picture with a PF on the headpage of a newspaper instead of christiano ronaldo's gayface xDDDDd

awesome!
or ur mother XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDd
Parent
with that kind of sport youll be fat forever'
i dont think ganibg is a sport..
i mean its just a game and not a sport..
You can earn money with it but who does..
1/1000
bad point
football and icehockey have millions of serious players and only few make it even in national 1st level
Parent
more like a hobby
i won't consider it as sport, since it's not physical moving, tho darts is sports and writing a letter not, it's just something which needs to be considered as 1 "thing" itself...
You can't be very good at gaming if you don't move
Parent
yes, chess is a sport so gaming is also.
It's as much as a sport as darts, snooker or bowling.

Tbh who cares, just call it an e-sport and everyone's happy.
Imo playing games and nerdin' around has nothing to do with sport. THE END
are you serious? :XD

..you really need a fresh air... how could you even make poll like this :/
we, athletes, do not need fresh air !
Parent
I dont think its a sport in the traditional way of the word. But i do think playing games competitive has alot in common with playing other sports in competition.

I used to play basketball at a fairly skilled level, and what i loved about playing basketball is the same as the things i love in playing ET wars against good opponents. Both are really fast and u need great reflexes and hand - eye coordination, both require u the improvise and think really fast while processing alot of information.

I still like playing basketball more, but since i hate cold weather, playing ET is a good substitute for the bad and for the lazy days :)
hell no :D
you cant call it a real sport cause we are just too lazy to do some excercise on physichal terms but in competition lvl it is a sport imo.

So not rly a sport but a e-sport. and Yes they should start accepting it.
There are many ppl playing games so why not accept it?
Does a sport have to be physical? If so, define physical as well.
Parent
i just mean with real sports ppl train there body for that discipline we just sit and play that is one major difference.
Unless you count chess as a sport to then there is no difference at all and then is ET a sport ;)
Parent
So what kind of standards has something to meet to be called a sport according to you?
Parent
but they earn money anyway..
chess is sports too right? so gaming can be a sport too yes
I'm a cyber ath1337, so of course!
more like a drug
Sport can be addictive.
Parent
depends..
i dont think it's addictive in the way drugs or gaming can be
Parent
In my opinion, gaming has nothing to do with sport
depends on how serious you take it 8D
every progamer has a proshaped body (urtier) so yes
Like shot-putter?
Parent
no, lol nerds
yes, the pro gamers are similar to other pro sports stars. I see no reason how gaming would not be consired as a sport
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
NEVER
If dart and chess are considered sports, why not gaming?
Well if throwing "darts" and shooting with "airpistol" is olympic sport then please, gaming is sport too.

Looking at the guys who do darts, airpistols and bowling... they are all fat, there heart rate goes up only coz of exsitement and not because of hard work.
QuoteIt clearly has the competition part of sports, requires practise and discipline, blablabla. And lot's of non-physical activites are considered sports, too.
gaming = hobby imo
No but similar. I wouldn't call darts or chess a sport either.. but millions watch it on tv and they make a living from it.
If gaming is considered as a sport, so is sex then.
sex is a sport , many calories :) xD
Parent
let the competition begin!
Parent
eSport ftw
all who say esports should be accepted are morons
lol nope :p
SPORTS FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not :D
not actually a sport
It's more like a hobby...
well since chess is a sport

i think gaming is also a sport xD
what else should it be than sport? art?
do you see weed everywhere you go?
Parent
no, why? Just answering your question :)
Parent
I didnt say anthing else. I am just wondering what ever it is if not sport..
it depends. if you mean art as music or taking photography too, i cant agree with you.. on the other hand i think that "abstract" art is art for art and its crap
