Almost everytime time I play at a random cup, I get frustrated by the admins. Thats why I decided to write a few words about how running cups could be done better. All this is just based on my personal opinions and experience so this might not be the Universal Truth and sometimes you need to make compromises.
1. Being creative is always nice, but don't implement too many non-standard maps. People like to play cups to show their skills and prove something, playing random maps without tacs can be funny but not really measuring anything. Also, remember to seed better teams equally.
2. Don't change rules during the tournament. And if you really need to, make sure everyone participating has been informed and then do it between the rounds. And really, don't do this becouse of a clan or two, even if they are somewhat respected or famous.
3. Admins aren't gods. So don't act like one. Your job is is to enforce the rules and solve conflicts politically, not by how famous the other team is.
4. Don't be an asslicker, treat everyone equally. (Can't emphasise this enough)
5. If you or some other admin makes a decision, keep with it. Otherwise you once again make yourself look like an idiot.
6. Don't get too focused on coverage / ETTV. The tournament is for the players, and most people don't like waiting for something irrelevant.
7. Use standard rulesets which everyone knows. If you really want to run something special, make sure everyone knows this. No one usually reads the rules.
8. Make sure you have interest and time to run the cup from round 1 to the final and its coverage if its required.
9. Don't run a cup to gain reputation or actually anything. Only do it if you see that people want it.
10. Try to organize dates so they wont overlap with other tournaments.
And as I see it, one day cups are quite boring nowadays. You have to play the whole damn day continuosly. One match per week is also way too slow speed for a cup which has no real prizes nor respect. Tournaments with one match per day or match per 2 days is nice, it keeps interest up for both admins and players.
