image: before_cc5 Ever wondered which nation is the strongest, which the weakest, or why v&e are one Belgian short of guaranteed gold at this weekends championship? Read on for a brief statistical breakdown of the previous Crossfire Challenge events.

The Challenge events are a multicultural affair involving players spread across the four corners of the continent, from the UK to Russia, Italy to Finland and Estonia to Spain. A total of fifteen nations have stood on the Crossfire Challenge podium, with 20% of possible meddles going to differing nations. But which nation has performed best?

In at fifteen, the worst of the best, the nation of Ireland with one third place finish. Sweden, Poland, Croatia, UK, Italy, Malta and Slovenia are the rest of the worst of the best, the trailing pack with sporadic point scoring. One point separates Slovenia and Malta at the foot of the table thanks to toxic and jakazc, adding an extra spice to any mamut and Impact encounter.

Next up, comfortably mid-table though some way off challenging for the top spot the tournaments two greatest performing players ButtonBasher teammates Winghaven and Clown, with Español and Latvia joint sixth respectively, two golds and one silver each.

Estonia, Germany and the Netherlands make up the chasing pack, some 30 points shy of the lead. Thanks to Night and Reload’s reliable performances Estonia have a respectable 54 points, though they’ve never had the numbers present at an event, usually one choice Estonian a team maketh, slowly accumulating the points. This isn’t likely to change this time round, with Estonia only able to earn a maximum of 20 points.

Surprisingly only three Germans have ever placed in the top three at a Challenge event, unsurprisingly, the second best duo in Wolfenstein senji and urtier making up two of the three. They’ve totalled 38 points between them, more than half of Germanys total. At the tail of this chasing pack are the Dutch. Though they’ve consistently showed up in numbers, and generally achieved respectable placings within the top six, only one Dutch player, teKoa has ever placed first. Team nl making up the bulk of the nations points total with their all Dutch 3rd at CPC1. No Dutch player has placed in the top three since CPC2, an ominous sign for the highly touted Impact gaming.

Next up is Belgium, the Felipe Massa of the Wolfenstein world, just two points shy of the Fins thanks to the effervescent duo of mAus and dAv1d, totalling an impressive 52 points between them, more than the bottom five nations of Ireland, Slovenia, Malta, Italy and the United Kingdom combined. Though they’re unlikely to overtake the Fins this time round, with no dAv1d and eight Fins likely to place in the top three. Thanks to the disgraced ex-Overload Belgians being removed from the competition there’s now only one realistic title contender, with the three FiF Belgians needing to overachieve to retain some semblance of national pride.

Finland top the table, buoyed by TLR superstar Matias and his two victories. Iron is the only other Finnish player to have won an ET Challenge event, though he trails behind Tiigeri, always the bridesmaid and never the bride in the Finnish rankings with twelve points and two runners up meddles, for sFx and Impact respectively. Xpaz, Jauhis, lettu, twidi, mystic, Raveneye and Squall being the seven other Fins to have placed top three.

Though the nation breakdown makes for an interesting titbit, what we really want to know is who’s earned their keep through the Challenge events, and who can't afford the airfare home?

If ever there was a statistic reinforcing the perception that sustainable LAN competition is a labour of love for these teams this is it. The four highest earning players over the four events, having attended three, winning gold twice and silver once are mAus, dAv1d, Clown and Winghaven, earning an approximate 833 € each. Little more than enough to cover the airfare for one event, let alone three.

Night, ferus and Matias complete the ‘dream team’ of CC competitors, earning 2000 € between them, a respectable 666 € each. More than the nations of Slovenia and the United Kingdom combined.

Sol is the only non-Benelux player to have placed top 3 yet won less than 100 €, his third place at CPC 2 winning him just 83.33€.

Players who have never failed to medal (excluding those who only attended one event): night, urtier, clown, xpaz, matias, holz, ferus, tiigeri and r3vers. Though the latter four won't be attending CC5.
