gimp pros needed

hi, i did some quick tests with photoshop cs4 vs gimp 2.6

I have 4 pictures. 2 big ones which i made smaller, two small ones which i made larger.
Each task with each program.

As you can see, the bigger images which i made smaller look WAY better and WAY more like the original picture when done with PS. I dont see any real difference when making small pictures bigger. Did i do something wrong in gimp or is photoshop cs4 already way better at such simple tasks?

thanks

cant see the difference sir : ' >
open the two images which are 800x600 and display them in fullscreen

so u have for example:

"60Voda_gimp.JPG"
"60Voda_ps.JPG"

watch them both in fullscreen and press the arrow keys left-right while watching the "subaru" symbol on the car. on the gimp image it looks rly bad.

even more visible on the:

"Subaru_WRC_-_New_Zealand_2008_144628_20081014_gimp.jpg"
"Subaru_WRC_-_New_Zealand_2008_144628_20081014_ps.jpg"

but on that image gimp also said smth about that it has to convert from "adobe rgb" into something else.. that might explain the rly big quality loss and the totally different colours.

But on the "60Voda_gimp.jpg" there is a big loss in details ?

There is a great difference, but I am afraid that I can't help you : (.
What was your processing method? Were they both jpg to start with? The PS one looks like it had additional sharpening done to it (which does happen with RAW files) but can't really help unless you mention any processing methods :P
processing methods.. that should be:

i used "linear" or "kubisch" in gimp.. both the same.. in ps4 i used the one where it says "best for reduction"

and the original images are in the folder "tester" and are all .jpg´s

Its just their settings not the quality mate.
e:but yes ps is better :)
I have done an image, hope it helps:http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/9435/crop100n.jpg
Colors seems to be the same, imho ps could have added a little contrast mask to sharpen image and get a better contrast, but I' ve never used Ps, and I think you can have the same results as ps, working a little more harder with gimp.

And yes what Panda says it's right.
ye making the small imagine bigger is no problem.. but now try it with one of the bigger images to make it smaller :P
the original pictures (i guess u saw that already) are in "tester".

If I try to download: Subaru_WRC_-_New_Zealand_2008_144628_20081014_gimp.jpg I got a very damaged picture wich is unusable to make a confrontation, but if I try to resize original picture with gimp, there' s the adobe color profile problem.

If you try to convert it, colors get a red dominant, while green and blu got lowerd, and brightness and contrast got fucked up as well, so I think that's the problem.

Just my opinion. :)

then try it with the 60voda.jpg

no need for converting and still looks very bad :/ also why doesnt gimp support these colours.. it means i cannot edit such .jpg´s properly with gimp?

In the Subaru image there's just some contrast shit applied to the photoshop one.

Also notice that GIMP is free and is not intended to be a replacement for Photoshop.
Not a replacement but still a nice alternative if you're sticking with free/open source stuff.
But I'm happy using cs5 in linux which works perfect <333
Parent
there is cs5 already? :o

well i hat it that i have like 50 connections active from "activate.adobe.com" ... trying to connect trough 50 different ports all the time. So thats why i wanted to get rid of photoshop and get GIMP.. but already at such simple tasks like resizing pictures i notice a quality loss with gimp :S
Parent
cs5 is the shit! Also with cracked copies etc you put a load of IPs @ your hosts file to stop all those activate shit from loading in the first place e.g.

127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 practivate.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 ereg.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate.wip3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 wip3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 3dns-3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 3dns-2.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe-dns.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe-dns-2.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe-dns-3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 ereg.wip3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate-sea.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 wwis-dubc1-vip60.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate-sjc0.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe.activate.com
127.0.0.1 adobeereg.com
127.0.0.1 www.adobeereg.com
127.0.0.1 wwis-dubc1-vip60.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 125.252.224.90
127.0.0.1 125.252.224.91
127.0.0.1 hl2rcv.adobe.com

Which blocks those!
Parent
it blocks them.. meaning the connecto your pc all the time instead of the adobe server. still i have 50 (or way more) connections openend from my computer to my computer all the time. And they are closing/opening/connecting etc all the time.

If that wouldnt be , i would stick with photoshop :S i´m not a real photoshopper anyway.. and the basics i know about photoshop wont be hard to learn in gimp too.. but i think photoshop has way more features than gimp. tho i wouldnt need 80% of them anyway :P
Parent
Manually sort what ports you have open the, but that list I posted up will block a lot of stuff from adobe in the first place. But 50 ports/connections open? O_O

Only stuff I do in photoshop is for my photographs anyway, I'm still learning the program after years of using it but it's nice to have some of the new feats in cs5 etc! :>
Parent
made a video to show it (i havent started photoshop or have any photoshop service(process running):

http://beasty.wippiespace.com/stuff/ps.rar

and yes u will block it from opening connections outside but instead of really blocking it, you redirect it. you redirect the connection to your own pc. So your comptuer is opening connections all the time to your own computer.
Parent
o0 I don't have that many adobe.activation in mine! + with the localhost (127.0.0.1) it will only try once, see it's not working as it's @ local and stop, whereas if you're giving the adobe.activation an invalid ip address it'll keep trying to connect after it times out, so it's not /that/ bad. You could always block incoming/outgoing ports manually @ router if you wanted. 49193-49197 etc if they're open.

Not that big of a deal for me anyway, program runs fine + no hassle with my copy :D
Parent
also strange thing: normally it should only try to activate when i run a adobe program.. but i dont. maybe it is adobe bridge? do u also have adobe bridge?
Parent
Nope, never installed it when I do photoshop!
Only adobe programs I have @ programs and features = Audtion, Flash, Photoshop cs5, Reader =]
Parent
will try to get cs5 then and do it without the bridge stuff (altough i think it installed automatically).. i also cannot just uninstall the adobe bridge.. only see adobe photoshop
Parent
lol i uninstalled it and removed everything related to adobe & photoshop (except flash player) and now look at this -.-

http://beasty.wippiespace.com/stuff/ps/
Parent
lol =D

obvious question but did you reboot pc btw? :P
Parent
Sup with all the CSn shit, Photoshop 7 i still good :)

Or if you want something more.. recent, get CS2 or something. I bet they don't even actually add anything in those new versions, just make them more bloaty and such.
Parent
Not really bloated + you can choose the options of what you want to load up e.g. essentials, design blah blah. As a photographer it's a great improvement for me from all the previous versions so I'm happy with it :ppp
