Geek porn v2

Again, time for some hardware.

As I've mentioned in my previous journal I'm thinking about purchasing a new system to play some games once in a while.

Should be nothing too fancy but still run most games (especially ET) pretty smooth.

I ended up with 2 setups but I'm still having some doubts..

this shit aint gonna help you avoid SLAC
2GB is not enough nowadays, u'd better take 4Gb instead.
+
intel i series are quite efficient and promising, forget about AMD.

For your gfx card take at least 1GB.

The rest looks fine
take atleast 1GB?
This is GDDR5. More than 512MB is not needed for the resolution he is playing.
Parent
ever heard about future ?

From now ye he won't need it but who knows after.
Parent
if he wanted to buy a pc for the future, it would have made more sense to buy HD5870.
He doesnt have the money. Simple as that, its the best you can get in that pricerange. Also 1GB is not neccesary. If you dont play a high resolution.
Parent
well it is indeed much more expensive but still cheaper than 5870 ( which is the best atm tbh quality/price )
Parent
amd sucks at that development status. could be better at present technologies but was shiat at that time ago

my advice:

random ASUS with 775 socket
dual core intel
the rest like you got

cheap(cheat) and efficient
The 2nd setup has all those things:

- E5500 Dual Core
- Asus P5QPL-AM socket 775
- etc..

So 2nd setup = win?
Parent
Almost?

You probably think I need more RAM. As long as you keep your OS clean and run ~ 25 processes 2 GB should easily cut it imo.

ET doesn't need that much btw.

Everything else looks ok btw..? Case, PSU, CPU, mobo..?

germans say: (i try to translate)

1000 cooks - 1000 opinions

mainboard and cpu are mains things to improve here, rest are nuances... won*t care about it that much.. k?
Parent
As long as it is at least a dual core from Intel it is ok the rest looks good to me.
Maybe the power supply, 300W is probably not enough and you'll have to change it a year after.

About the RAM, I honestly believe that 2GB won't be enough, ET doesn't need indeed a 4GB RAM and even not a 2GB but what kind of OS are you going to use ?
Most of the computers are nowadays running on 4GB and it's for a reason, the speed is obviously increasing and will give u a more comfortable access to any of ur process even on ur OS.
trust me ; ]
Parent
IDC about those calculators, if I say that it's because most of the computers I had to repair during those past months suffered from a shit power supply.
FACTS AND FACTS ONLY SIR.
Parent
more watt more win. nothing to discuss :)
Parent
more watt means less effiency = more power loss.
Parent
this is A brand, high quality power supply.
It's wrong to take B brand power supply like many people do.
Parent
ye
take at least dual core

u will succed in et :)
Parent
cheap and efficient like your mom imo
Parent
those PSUs are fucking shit. Get a good one.
what is wrong with it?
Its one of the most known and best brands.
Just not that known.
Parent
THERE HAPPEND SMTH WITH GOOGLE IMAGES WTF
buy a bench press
thought it said greek porn so I clicked :(
I am not sure wheter 300W PSu can handle hd5670 in long run or not, i would purchase some 400W one
HD5670 doenst even need pci-e express power connector so it wont use that much. ( max 75 W )
Parent
just spent 800 buildin mine was only supposed to pend like 400 but murr went mad
am2+? buy some am3 motherboard so you could change the cpu in the future, am3 > s775 (s775 is pretty much dead) + ddr3 isn't so expensive nowadays
i told him the am3 setup is more future proof.
But if he wants the most performance now, the intel will win it.
Parent
yeah you are right

that zenix guy knows his stuff
