external hdd yournal

Hoi, need some help with my external hdd, when i plug it in sometimes it says i need to format the disk to access it, anyway if i unplug it and re plug it i can access it, so i've took the stuff i want off of it, but now i cant format it :/

Any ideas what to do ?

Nah, doesn't work, fails every time, the loading bar just doesn't progress and then it crashes.

Oh, are you on vista or Windows 7?

I personally use Gparted to format my HDDs

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

Not sure how it works with externals, but couldn't see it being much different.

how come ? The HDD in itself is damaged, not the wire, and it's not even because of heat but because it felt (a ridiculous fall, it just got knocked down when it was on the floor...)
It now makes some strange noise, like a broken hdd you'll say, heh

I could make it work again during like 15 mins but beating it (yeah, that's rough now :D) but when I tried to copy all my content it bugged again. Now I can't make it working at all anymore :'(

Try Norton Ghost program. It can clone even a broken harddrive. I used that at work, when I was working on a store which fixed ppl's PC problems, cloned many broken hdds with weird noises ;) It just will take a lot of time. Or with bad luck, it wont clone it, but u still have a chance :P

Trust me, move everything out of this hdd and never use it again!

My Western Digital 500gb external usb2.0 7200rpm 16mb cache had exactly the same problem, but the "plug/unplug" trick made it work for a while, nP 4 me... turns out i decided to format my pc and use this hdd as a backup hdd..the hdd died before i could get my stuff back to normal hdd...6 months after this problem start...

ye, i've learned my lesson.. it seemed so stable at last months, didn't expect it to die like that :< lost everything, including my demos since 2007-now :'(

i've got everything i need of it i just need to put my stuff on the main pc to that so i can format my main pc, but after the problems you have i might consider buying a new ehd lol x
