well I mean most of the information is common sense on there. Like the stuff about how people in africa die to malaria. the information does no good when they talk about stuff like that. Those countries get millions and millions of dollars and euros each year in aid, and their leaders don't put it to research, what the fuck are we supposed to do?

some of the stuff on there is good for people to know about the wars in iraq/afghanistan, but some stuff coming out on wikileaks hurts the world. Some stuff is better off left in the closet with the other skeletons.

Just my 2 cents
Parent
stuff that gets leaked could start wars and things along those lines, it's happened in the past via conventional spying. If something was leaked about the North Korea/South Korea/USA situation, it could spark a conventional war, or a nuclear war(which =gg for the world).
Parent
That's why I doubt that every information wikileaks has access to gets leaked.
Parent
true my friend, true.
Parent
what do you think wikileaks is? it's place for information, obviously it should include as much of it as possible.

I agree not everything should be made public, but then again, there should be no secrets that can't take the heat.

sup cuban missle crisis
Parent
tell me more. (about the crisis and how it's in any way related to what I just said)
Parent
you said secrets need to be able to stand the heat.

I meant that if that is the logic the world and intelligence agencies viewed secrets with, we'll have another cuban missle crisis, with the whole world living on the edge of our seats.

Ignorance is bliss on some issues.
Parent
I'm still not following. and I said there should.

if the world knew about every secret we had, the world would be a terrible place. The public would demand revolutions/rebellions, and wars. Every government has skeletons in their closets, and if some came to light we'd have another situation like the CMC where nuclear war was narrowly avoided, although it could actually happen this time around. The leaders in control of some of the nuclear weapons in this world aren't the most stable people(cough, north korea). The fact is, not all secrets can hold up to the heat. Some secrets are meant to remain secrets for a very LONG time.
Parent
you're describing a world such as ours, with their secrets revealed.

A world that would play by different rules most likely wouldnt even know what government is.
Parent
I want no secrets, if u fail keeping it a secret GG.
Else v53 CMC

wikileaks!
I knew wikileaks before it was popular.
define popular
Parent
Before people like you knew it.
Parent
What an ignorant reply, though seeing you have to boast on internet forums about knowing internet site before mainstream did, one could've expected that.
Parent
seems interesting, thanks for sharing.
Parent
lol. wtf is this? these commercial "glitches".
Parent
what glitches?:o
Parent
depends how they get the information
trusted sources. what makes me eligible to say this, see the response of pentagon. http://mashable.com/2010/08/05/pentagon-wikileaks-demand/

I think it's a good thing.

Nice to stick it to those arrogant american bastards.
I am a huge proponent of transparency in government, and I like the idea of the site. However, people posting documents should have the decency and integrity to not post things that will endanger the lives of people. The retarded Aussie that leaked all the Pentagon papers should be tried in an international court (and sentenced to rot in prison in my opinion); there is a fine line between exposing corruption and giving out information that will help terrorists kill people. There was little to be gained by releasing many of those documents, especially if you are opposed to war. If the documents were, say, exposing military spending or wrongdoing in administration, that would be a boon to freedom and I would be 100% supportive, however I think the recent leaks have been a net loss for humanity.
QuoteConsider the following statement offered by Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at a news conference last week. He was discussing Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks as well as the person who has taken responsibility for the vast, still ongoing Afghan War document dump at that site. "Mr. Assange,” Mullen commented, “can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his source are doing, but the truth is they might already have on their hands the blood of some young soldier or that of an Afghan family.”

Now, if you were the proverbial fair-minded visitor from Mars (who in school civics texts of my childhood always seemed to land on Main Street, U.S.A., to survey the wonders of our American system), you might be a bit taken aback by Mullen’s statement. After all, one of the revelations in the trove of leaked documents Assange put online had to do with how much blood from innocent Afghan civilians was already on American hands.

He has a point, but I'm not quite on either side. Prudence is the key here, I don't believe that all secret documents should stay that way, but Mr. Assange should have used better judgment when deciding which ones to release.

Then again, people don't like a compromising middle ground in today's world, it has to be all out one way or the other. It really gets in the way of progress since there are seemingly equal numbers on either side and none of them are willing to budge.
Parent
Appreciate the opinion, in fact I was hoping for such comments.
However my opinion on the case should be left untold.
Parent
I have a feeling this is going to come up again, so let me state for the record that I am generally distrustful of the US government (actually, I'm distrustful of any government run by politicians).
Parent
In a world that's ever more interconnected and ever more controlled (it will be increasingly in the future - that's the inevitable consequence of technology - especially the internet) places like wikileaks are a necessity for exposing wrongdoings & putting governments up for scrutiny - regardless of the consequences.

If a government has a secret so severe that it could cause a nuclear war then fuck people should know about it...
Parent
Governments should be scrutinized without leaking confidential information. Government should be treated like a necessary evil rather than a friend, I don't know why Americans put up with our current system, where we have one government representative per 500,000 people. Like Thomas Jefferson said, we need a revolution every ten years.
Parent
some interesting point of view into this all, with some depth

There's thousands of documents that've yet to be released & the UK paper redacted names - restraint was shown.
Parent
Julian Assange for president! fuck the white house & co
such a controversial statement ><

Have been following them for a while (both via site and just having twitter feeds and what not to my mobile) some stuff they publish are worth it, some questionable but it sucks that folks such as Lamo had to sell other leakers out (Case here).

Fun for browsing around though, but scary nonetheless!
Haven't been following it, I simply don't care.
