PC help #1

So had this virus that didnt want to leave, decided to just reinstall windows xp.
But after the format and install of windows my pc states that I only have 117 GB (107 used)free space instead of the 220 or so after windows install that should be avi.

Now I tried another format, tried to check it with treesize (stated I only have 4 GB in use) neither helped, anyway need a solution to get my 100 gig back

you never have the exact amount of HD that you bought (for example i bought an 500GB hitachi, i only have ~460gb on it)
ye but there is a difference between using a pc for 5 years and having 200 GB avi and after a format having only 117 free space and 107 used space

shit virruses also got 1 .
i stole your 100 gig, sorry, really needed.
WinXP without SP2 dont recognize HDDs with more than 120 GB...this could be the problem
always used sp1 before and always had 200ish GB, besides installed sp2 and sp3 before the 2nd format and that changed nothing to the ammount of space avi
Parent
i dunno then... never was good at pc help, when i dont see the pc :X

well I took like 70GB from my pc onto a external harddisk, and about 110 GB was left on my pc before the format, pretty much the same ammount as what is now missing. Could that have anything to do with it?
Parent
instal partition magic and see if this lacking space its not classified as unused space
Parent
installed, got the screen now gives me 2 partitions H (recovery stuff) and C.

C:
-NTFS
-231.325,7 MB size
-110.593,9 MB used
-120.731,7 MB Unused

Now the problem is that it has 110 gig used but it is no where to be found (only am able to find 4.5 gig of stuff on my pc atm)

so what should I do now :D
Parent
your hdd could be broken... but thats only a guess...

there are programs to check if ur HDD got bad sectors, but never used them so dunno names
Parent
hmm somehow doubt its broken since it worked perfectly before the format
Parent
Just checked the partition info:

used 3.2 gig
unused 120.7 gig
bad 107.4 gig

So I guess the missing space equals the bad stuff, how do I fix that if possible?
Parent
ask overdrive aka tomeka2 :D

or google it
Parent
merge the two partitions using partition magic pro
Parent
how is merging the 7 gig partition going to help? just asking before doing it :P
Parent
no dont do that :)

well, Partition Magic pro should be your solution somehow. maybe post a screenshot of the info that pm gives you?

reading this :
C:
-NTFS
-231.325,7 MB size
-110.593,9 MB used
-120.731,7 MB Unused

when you installed, you formatted your hd? usually i delete my partition and make a new one assigning max mb to that one partition, i dont like splitting up into partitions.

maybe only set it to half the disk and havent formatted the second partition or something? again, post some screenies if you are really desperate for help

looking at the info you posted i think you made two partitions and you still need to format the second partition. that way you'll end up with two 110gb partitions, drive c:\ (where windows is installed) and drive d:\ (empty). you can then merge them, or possibly theres an option to add the unused space to the first partition.

also, when you bought a pc from a big vendor like HP (aka you didnt build it yourself) theres usually a part of the hd, a recovery partition to reinstall your pc but thats the 7gb you were talking about already

Ok let's see,

I called my brother (works in ICT) he told me to boot with windows cd and delete both partitions and just create a new one to install windows on, so I deleted both partitions, added up 250 gig

Next I tried to create a new partition and the maximum ammount I could add to the new one was 130 gig.Because that is kind of a low ammount my brother told me to do some scans in my BIOS to check if there are any errors in my harddisk and every test came out clean. So we just installed it on the 130gig partition and hoped for the best. So I am now running my computer on a 1 partition of 130 gig(and some 7MB thing)

This was the info I was refering to before:

used 3.2 gig
unused 120.7 gig
bad 107.4 gig

so basically the new partition just left out the bad disk space I guess

I can add a screen of partitionmagic at this moment(of the 130gig) but I doubt that is usefull, so unless you know of any device to restore the lost disk space (the bad 107 gig) it is most likely going to be a new pc (pc I have is like 6 years old anyway)
Parent
i trust your bro in what he sais :)

just buy a new hd :) bought 1TB last week for 60 euros or so, cant remember also bought some other shit
Parent
merge partitions into ntfs full
only have a 7gb (restore stuff) and a 225 GB partition so that shouldnt be the problem
Parent
install sp3 and voila.
as said above didnt affect anything, any other ideas?
Parent
dont use 10 years old cracked windows
prolly you did it wrong and half of the diskspace got missing -> computer managment -> format unknown partion -> success
