from CRT to LED screen

Hello guys. I'm gonna buy a new screen during next days.I've been using a big crt from 1930a.c. Pic: http://i.imgur.com/3weSk.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/GnL6G.jpg !

I kinda got used to play with 100hz (such a huge difference when i try to play with 60hz). Anyway, i've tried to find a 120hz lcd but the full hd ones are very expensive. Found one with decent price, but it is 1680x1050 or something like that.

Since i don't have money to waste at a 120hz one, tell me: do you really notice alot of difference between crt - lcd? what about 5ms vs 2ms ? I wouldn't mind buying one with tv included, but i can only find 5ms with tv. :|

Tell me your experience and if possible suggest me some new LED screens, >= 21.5' && <= 24'!

Thanks!

Hello ag0n.
1680x1050 is cool
get tv pci cart and take 2ms lcd -> insta win
pci tv card: ~40€
anyway for gaming: crt >> lcd
I already have a pci board for sattelite, but i prefer a normal screen... It's better, i would need to turn pc on to use the tv n stuff!
Parent
LED screens ftw tbh
Oh and i really need to change my screen because this one keeps going yellowish from time to time. I have to slap it to get normal colors (it's been like that for 2 years... yeah, imagine myself playing and slapping it xDDD )
Quotethis one keeps going yellowish from time to time. I have to slap it to get normal colors

same here :) pisses me off but I heard it can be solved by resoldering some contacts, too bad the casing of my monitor is like impossible to open :|
Parent
mm.. yeah, i'm sure this could be solved.. it's clearly some issue with "contacts" (touching? or wtv), but still, it's a very old screen... i think it's time to change... but i dont know if i will get used to widescreen / lcd / big screen.... i play like 30cm away from my current screen.. it's really huge as you can see!
Parent
I'd also really need to change my monitor but I don't want to, too used to 100 Hz and r_mode 8 and when I switch to LCD it's gonna suck
Parent
i play like 50 cm away from the monitor, 30 is nothing :/

or do you mean you MUST play 30 cm from the screen cuz the screen is rly large :O
Parent
I switched from 17" 100 Hz CRT to a 17" 60 Hz LCD and now I'm powning on a 15.4" laptop display. Don't worry bru, impossible is nothing!
Parent
But you rox! I already a suck at a big 100hz crt! :[

Well i've got to agree, i guess i would get used to it. I've never been a good aimer soo....
Parent
Well that's good because if you touched one of those capacitors, even after being off for a few days, you'd probably die.
Parent
I know(I'm in that line of work sort of), and some of them can hold the voltage for weeks, but the secret lies in grounding them ;)
Parent
You can discharge them, it probably says how to if you still have the manual which came with it.
Parent
Ur kidding or seriously? How can they store voltage for that amount of time? Explain pl0x! :O
Parent
That's what a capacitor does. A voltage across the conductors creates an electric field storing the energy. So it is somewhat similar to a short term battery, and in this case much much more powerful.
Parent
my IBM P202 crt had one slap too many
rip ibm you oversized heavy piece of crap
Parent
don't buy 5ms lcd for gaming. you will experience so called screen tearing which annoyingly fucks up your view and is very tiresome for the eyes.
unless you get a LED one, those are less tiresome for zhe eyes :p
Parent
crossfire with top banner, wat?
=) stylish theme by kyra!
Parent
where the fuck is he? didnt he even make the wesbo-kitty monster pic?
Parent
ye i think so :D i wish i could see that pic again ahgahahaha :D
well, he is around sometimes :P here at cf
Parent
good news then :D
you should ask wesbo for the photo i guess
Parent
1st thing you have to know - the ms and the contradiction ratio means jack shit. each company got its own "rating" and basicly they're advertising lies..

2nd there is quite a big difference between lcd and crt but if you really want to buy a lcd monitor I suggest that you check forums/sites such as www.tomshardware.com and see what the guys there say.

p.s. I have an lcd monitor and what I did is reducing the resolution (r_mode 6) and that allowed me to set a higher value of hz (r_displayrefresh 75) which really do improve the gameplay.
same... i use r_mode 6 already ^^
Parent
It's pretty hard to find a decent LCD for gaming. Firstly the native resolution is pretty huge (1680*1050 or bigger) and at those resolutions you won't be able to use anything over 60hz.

60hz is pretty crappy in fast paces shooters and 75hz isn't great either but it's definitely preferable. You need to know the resolution you will play games at will work for you as well as what res you want to watch your movies at. When I used to play on a TFT I used half the native resolution at 75hz.

Getting a CRT would be cheaper and the results would be better, 120hz LCDs are good also but as you said you don't have money to waste. Ensure you buy something that is appropriate for everything you want to use it for.

Anandtech used to be pretty good for all your info like response time, colour reproduction, contrast etc so I suggest you check there.
thats the problem here :|

I would like to have a 120hz screen to play, but i've never been a great aimer, guess it won't make MUCH difference for me... I play with r_mode 6 and 100hz right now, would like to keep it, eventhough its impossible (hz). Everything else is fine for me. Full hd is a must have nowadays!
Parent
Most of the films I watch are 720*460 or 624* 352. The only time I ever watch something above this is if I download a fragmovie which will likely be 1280*800. 1680*1050 is perfectly adequate for me and 1920*1080 isn't necessary on a screen of such a small size in my opinion.

What you could do is get both a CRT and an LCD and run them simultaneously which is the solution most gamers come to.
Parent
I dont have space to have both there and swap to play lol : ( i would mind to have a 1680x1050 120hz to play, i dont watch full hd movies (max 720p), but sometimes i need to test some games (benchmarks ) n stuff at full hd (to help a friend ), thats why i think it makes sense to buy a full hd screen :X
Parent
You can run those tests at any resolution independent of your actual screen size.
Parent
I mean the screen have to support the resolution(1920x1080)
Parent
Depending on which benchmark you're talking about you can actually run HD (1920*1080) tests even if it's not exposed by the display. I.e the screen is smaller than 1920*1080.
Parent
so you are saying if i buy a 1680x1050 22' screen for example, i will be able to run some games at full hd (1920x1080) ? doesn't make much sense imo!
Parent
No i mean set benchmarks can be run at resolutions higher than the display.

For example like you can run et in windowed mode at 1920*1080 no matter than resolution of your monitor.
Parent
windows mode :D i meant full screen, some games only run at fullscreen
Parent
the differance is huge tbh in ET tbh, CRT is just godlike compared to lcd
since my lovely 22 inch crt is dying i want to switch bak to a tft lcd whatever that shit calls but 75 hz is kinda annoying :s
y the quality of the pics sucks so hard?! didnt expect such low work from u /:
i havent notice much diffirence

notice the difference going from 60 > 100, so going the opposite youll notice a skill drop - your tacking will be off :(
1680x1050
:'(
I can get the same here at portugal for almost same price.. would be great a full hd one for this price!

not much of an increase if you can find the one without the glasses could be a bit cheaper too, no idea how good it actually is though :)

1680x1050 isnt that bad though
Parent
55Hz - 75Hz + 5ms
:X
Parent
it will have 120hz option, cant have it in the title otherwise (:
Parent
if you say tho : ( i've seen some 3d ready screens at portugal and they don't support 120hz
Parent
ive got that screen lol.
Parent
1680x1050 is difficult to work with for movie making (16:10) go for a 16:9. The new Samsung LEDs are really nice.

XL2370, BX2250, BX2235 and BX2335
http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-peripherals/monitor/led-monitor/index.idx?pagetype=subtype_p2
I record at 16*10 and then crop to 16*9 xD current screen doesn't let me force 1920x1080 (i need to use 1920x1200 then crop).

New image records offscreen, i guess it wouldn't be a problem, but still.. i prefer to record fullscreen during night..
Parent
Ah right, well yeah I used to have a 16*10 screen and had a lot of encode issues. Since I got my 16*9 it has been so much easier.

I like the new image but still can't get over the stuff madscientist left out from the old one. Like being able to control RGB on all levels.

I'm playing with HDR at the moment, would be cool if the new version could post process that for you. i.e. set you over-exposed, normal and under-exposed values, and have image post-process all three frames (instead of needing photoshop).
Parent
Well, i've never used the RGB correction, but when finally i noticed it was a good feature, madscientist decided to remove. If i remember correctly he says that this kind of corrections (and gamma) is something post process and looses quality. He said we could use better program for post process then (like photoshop) and implemented HDR. HDR isn't so "easy" to use as rgb correction but if can help alot once you get used to it.

I kinda love HDR nowadays. I had to change (still changing) all my maps config to use hdr :|

Litle example of GR with hdr:
http://beta-gaming.de/et/ag0n/ComuMovie/jere50fps_noressample.mkv
Parent
Ah righto fair enough. Yeah I can imagine you need to make all the brightness/gamma settings in your map configs neutral to get the most accurate HDR results?

That clip is nice btw, so much better than that bloom crap (no offence to anyone in particular).
Parent
seta r_ext_NV_fog_dist "0"
seta r_clampToEdge "1"
seta r_wolffog "0"
seta r_overBrightBits "1"
seta r_mapOverBrightBits "1.7"
seta r_intensity "2.42"
seta r_gamma "1"
seta r_ignorehwgamma "1"
seta img_hdr "1"
vid_restart

this is my config for gr. I play mainly with intensity and r_mapoverbrighbits..
Parent
Ah nice might give that a go, oh btw found a couple of old screenshots from a clip I couldn't encode nicely a while back. It was taken using the old image with tweaked gamma, highlight and shadow settings;

goldy no gun flash
goldy with gun flash
Parent
not my taste :f i dont like extreme things.. my clip has some contrast as you can see, but it's not that dark xD
Parent
see this is why you need a new screen! it isn't that dark at all on my samsung p2270 :p
Parent
that viewsonic screen lets me go fullscreen 1920x1080 with image
Parent
thats weird now @.@
Parent
ah no, seems Im wrong :) was messing about a bit - seems it cannot =)
Parent
ye it doesn't make sense at fullscreen : (
Parent
The difference is huge
